Here's a familiar sight: memory chip stocks are falling hard on a report about China, and the rest of the market is trying to decide how much it cares. The Dow shrugged it off. The Nasdaq did not.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI) is up 0.24% as of 11:41 a.m. ET. The S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) has slipped 0.33% and the Nasdaq Composite (NASDAQINDEX: ^IXIC) is down 0.61%, weighed by its heavier high-tech hardware exposure.
Missed Nvidia in 2009? This Rare Signal Is Flashing Again. In 2009, a "Double Down" signal flashed for a little-known chipmaker called Nvidia. For the first time in years, that same "Total Conviction" signal is flashing for a company 1/100th the size of Nvidia. Continue »
Micron fell 6% on a "maybe" and a warning
Over the weekend, reports surfaced that the Trump administration might allow Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) to buy memory chips from Chinese suppliers, apparently as a goodwill gesture ahead of President Xi Jinping's visit next month.
Meanwhile, a Micron Technology (NASDAQ: MU) researcher spoke at the Hot Chips 2026 conference, noting that the speed of AI computing is outpacing the underlying memory bandwidth. Compute power is climbing about 3 times every two years, while memory bandwidth advances less than 2 times, so memory increasingly sets the ceiling on how fast an AI system can run. That cuts both ways: it means AI can't get enough memory, but it also means the whole industry, Micron included, is facing an unsolved bottleneck.
Add a possible new Chinese competitor to that picture, and every major memory stock fell on Monday.
Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) fell 2.1% ahead of its Wednesday earnings, subtracting the most of any stock from both the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq. (Yes, Micron's price drop was larger but Nvidia carries nearly five times Micron's weight on the Nasdaq Composite index.) With chip valuations stretched after a large run, investors are treating the report as a key test of AI sentiment.
The buyers of AI hardware fared better than the makers. Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOG) (NASDAQ: GOOGL) rose 1.7%, and other "Magnificent 7" components were up by less than a percent, even as the chipmakers that supply them fell.
The Dow stayed green on strength outside the technology sector. Visa (NYSE: V) rose 2.8% for about 61 index points and Travelers (NYSE: TRV) added 2.3%.
What's riding on Nvidia and the Fed this week
Monday is the quiet opening to a loaded week. Nvidia will report Q2 2027 results after Wednesday's close, and Wall Street will be watching closely. Earlier the same day, the Fed's preferred inflation gauge hits the news wires. Later in the week, Fed chairman Kevin Warsh speaks at the Jackson Hole symposium, where investors want his read on the Treasury's moves to calm the bond market.
And looming over everything is the Iran war, now six months old. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent rolled out what he's calling an "economic D-Day," a sanctions push aimed at any country still doing business with Tehran. That threat is part of why oil actually fell today, as traders bet on the pressure without a fresh supply shock.
