UBS Global Wealth Management, part of UBS Group AG (NYSE:UBS), expects the S&P 500 as measured by the State Street SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (NASDAQ:SPY) to finish 2026 at 8,100, roughly 6% above Thursday's close of 7,641.

Prediction market traders agree the index will likely cross 8,000. They are far less confident it can stay there.

Polymarket prices an 84% chance the index touches 8,000 before year-end, but only a 36% chance it finishes above that level.

The gap captures the question hanging over this rally: can AI-driven earnings outrun war-related inflation and rising long-term borrowing costs?

What UBS Needs to Go Right

UBS raised its forecast for the combined earnings of S&P 500 companies to the equivalent of $350 per index share in 2026, up from $335. It expects that figure to reach $400 in 2027, up from its previous $375 estimate.

Analysts use this index-level earnings figure to value the overall market. Dividing UBS's 8,100 target by its $400 forecast gives a price-to-earnings ratio of approximately 20.3. In other words, investors would be paying just over $20 for every $1 the S&P 500's companies are expected to earn in 2027.

Rather than betting investors will pay substantially more for each dollar of profit, UBS expects rising earnings to drive the index higher. That depends on its three pillars holding firm: resilient economic growth, supportive monetary policy and continued AI adoption.

AI Could Provide the Earnings

UBS expects semiconductors to contribute more than 40% of second-quarter profit growth, with AI capital spending rising 70% this year. That makes Nvidia Corp. (NASDAQ:NVDA) and AI budgets at Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ:MSFT), Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) and Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOGL) central to the 8,100 case.

UBS also sees all 11 sectors growing profits, so financials, industrials and consumer names must pull their weight alongside the chipmakers.

War Could Stop the S&P 500 From Holding 8,000

UBS's own revisions show why traders hedge the close. It cut its target from 7,700 to 7,500 in April as the Iran war lifted oil prices, then raised it to 7,900 in May and 8,100 now.

Renewed U.S.-Iran fighting could keep oil prices and inflation elevated, sustain pressure on Treasury yields and leave the Federal Reserve less room to ease. That would squeeze both profits and the multiples investors pay for technology stocks.

Polymarket traders see that as a material risk. They give the U.S.-Iran ceasefire a 64% chance of holding through Sept. 30, implying a 36% chance that the United States launches a qualifying strike against Iran before then.

Goldman Sachs (NYSE:GS) made a similar bet in May, targeting 8,000 on AI-driven earnings rather than higher valuations. The index may not need peace to reach 8,000, but holding it could require stable oil, lower yields and sustained AI spending.
