Headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Akamai Technologies, Inc. (AKAM) is a leading cybersecurity and cloud computing company helping businesses stay secure, connected and resilient online. Its broad security portfolio and global threat intelligence help protect enterprise data, applications and digital infrastructure, while its distributed cloud platform delivers the speed, scale and reliability businesses need to operate efficiently.

Trusted by enterprises worldwide, Akamai combines cybersecurity expertise with cloud capabilities to support businesses as their digital needs continue to grow. Akamai Technologies has delivered a standout run on Wall Street, with its roughly $17.96 billion market capitalization now backed by a sharp acceleration in its share price. Over the past year, AKAM has surged 68.3%, while the rally has remained solid in 2026, with the stock already up 43.1% year to date (YTD).

That performance puts Akamai comfortably ahead of the broader market. By comparison, the S&P 500 Index ($SPX) has gained 20.4% over the past year and 13.7% so far in 2026. Akamai has also edged out the State Street Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLK), which has returned about 42% over the past year and 32% year to date. The numbers highlight just how strongly Akamai has outpaced both the broader market and its technology peers.

Akamai's stock has enjoyed a powerful run over the past year, driven by massive multi-billion-dollar AI cloud infrastructure contracts, rapid growth across its cloud computing and cybersecurity businesses, and its strong positioning in latency-sensitive AI inference workloads. However, that rally hit a bump after the company reported its fiscal 2026 second-quarter earnings on August 6. Shares fell nearly 3% on the day of the report and slid more than 6% in the following trading session as investors digested a sharp decline in profitability and a weaker-than-expected forward outlook.

At first glance, the quarter offered some positives. Revenue rose 5.4% year over year to $1.1 billion, narrowly beating analysts' expectations. But the revenue beat was overshadowed by a significant deterioration in the company's profitability. Akamai's GAAP operating margin was nearly cut in half, dropping to 7.3% from 14.5% in the same period last year. The company's forward outlook added to the pressure. Akamai's revenue guidance for the upcoming quarter came in 1.4% below analysts' estimates, while management also lowered its adjusted earnings-per-share forecast for the full year.

Looking ahead, analysts expect Akamai to face some pressure on the bottom line. For the fiscal year ending in December, consensus estimates call for EPS of $3.88, marking a 12% decline from the prior year. The company's recent earnings track record also offers a mixed picture. Akamai has surpassed consensus estimates in two of the past four quarters, but fallen short in the other two.

Nevertheless, Wall Street is giving Akamai a cautiously bullish vote of confidence, with AKAM holding a consensus "Moderate Buy" rating. Of the 22 analysts covering the stock, 11 recommend a "Strong Buy," one has a "Moderate Buy," and nine advise investors to "Hold." Only one analyst remains firmly bearish with a "Strong Sell" rating. The tone has also improved slightly in recent weeks. A month ago, Akamai had two "Strong Sell" ratings, and that number has since dropped to one.

Last week, Akamai received a more cautious vote from Wall Street. HSBC downgraded AKAM from "Buy" to "Hold" and sharply cut its price target from $171 to $123. The move reflects growing concerns over weaker-than-expected cloud infrastructure margins, slower earnings growth and elevated capital spending.

The average price target of $157.09 points to roughly 25.7% upside from current levels, while the Street-high target of $195 suggests the stock could rally as much as 56%. These targets indicate that, despite some recent caution from analysts, several on Wall Street still see considerable room for AKAM to climb.
