Stripe acquires AI model gateway OpenRouter for $7 billion

Stripe has finalized an agreement to acquire OpenRouter, a startup that helps developers select and switch between AI models, for more than $7 billion, according to Bloomberg.
The deal follows OpenRouter's $113 million Series B, which closed just months ago at a reported $1.3 billion valuation. The Wall Street Journal had previously reported that Stripe and OpenRouter were in talks at a price of around $10 billion. A Stripe spokesperson told TechCrunch that the company does not comment on rumors or speculation, and OpenRouter declined to comment, according to Bloomberg.
Founded in 2023 and based in New York, OpenRouter gives developers a single access point to more than 400 AI models, helping them find the most cost-efficient option for each task. The company says it serves 8 million developers and also offers backup access in cases where a primary model fails.
OpenRouter CEO Alex Atallah has drawn a direct comparison between his company and Stripe, arguing that OpenRouter plays the same role in AI that Stripe plays in payments — acting as a common layer that spans many underlying systems and avoids vendor lock-in. Atallah's previous venture was OpenSea, a nonfungible token marketplace; he left that company in July 2022 and had launched OpenRouter within a year.
The startup has raised more than $150 million in total capital. Its investors include Sequoia, Andreessen Horowitz, Menlo Ventures, and CapitalG, one of Alphabet's venture arms.
The acquisition would give Stripe, a payments processing firm, a foothold in the AI infrastructure sector at a moment when businesses are under pressure to manage AI costs. Developers working on agentic software applications are the primary driver of OpenRouter's expansion, a segment that by its nature demands the ability to draw on infrastructure spanning multiple providers and data sources. That pressure has intensified as Chinese AI companies have flooded the market with cheaper models that many developers consider adequate for a wide range of tasks.
The final acquisition price could still change.
