Harvard Management Co. disclosed a $2.2 billion stake in SpaceX, making Space Exploration Technologies Corp. the largest single stock position in the endowment's quarterly securities filing.
According to the 13F filing, submitted last Friday, Harvard's total U.S. equity holdings stood at $4.3 billion at the time of the report. As of June 2025, Harvard's endowment was valued at $57 billion, the last figure the institution has made public. Harvard Management Co. spokesman Patrick McKiernan declined to comment on individual investments, according to Fortune. The holdings may reflect directly owned stock, distributions from private funds, or both.
SpaceX went public in June at $135 per share and finished Friday's session at $140, a decline of 0.9%. SpaceX's market capitalization currently exceeds $1.8 trillion.
The IPO has delivered gains for university endowments that placed bets on SpaceX through venture capital firms, in some cases more than a decade ago, according to Bloomberg. The University of California's investment arm reported a SpaceX position worth roughly $1 billion in a filing this week, according to Fortune. The University of North Carolina and Washington University in St. Louis also hold positions.
Harvard is among the largest endowment holders of SpaceX stock to have disclosed a position. The windfall arrives at a difficult moment for U.S. university finances, with cuts to federal research grants, a declining cohort of college-age students driven by demographic trends, and sluggish returns from private equity all weighing on institutions. Among endowment funds managing more than $500 million, the median return before fees in the fiscal year through June was 18.9%, according to Bloomberg, which cited Wilshire Trust Universe Comparison Service data.
Institutional money managers with more than $100 million in U.S. equities must submit a 13F form no later than 45 days after each quarter's close, listing their positions in domestically traded stocks.
