The second-largest acquisition of a venture-backed company on record is official.
Cursor, the fast-growing agentic coding startup, is now a part of SpaceX after the space giant led by Elon Musk completed its $60 billion all-stock acquisition Friday. The deal pairs one of the fastest-growing startups with SpaceX's vast—and expensive to run—infrastructure-centric xAI division. The latter has its sights set on improving its AI service offerings and is betting big on agentic coding to get there.
"Cursor turns SpaceX's xAI investment from an infrastructure bet into a vertically integrated enterprise platform," said Harrison Rolfes, a senior research analyst at PitchBook who covers the major AI frontier labs. "Without Cursor, SpaceX owns expensive compute and a model seeking distribution."

The deal also gives some of Cursor's biggest backers more exposure to Musk's companies. Andreessen Horowitz, for instance, which backed two of SpaceX's other acquisitions, X and xAI, is getting an additional dip into SpaceX stock via its investment in Cursor.
Cursor's behemoth acquisition is dwarfed only by SpaceX's takeover of xAI in February. That merger valued the frontier lab at $250 billion and brought all of Elon Musk's "X" companies under one umbrella. But the addition of xAI into the fold has been an expensive endeavor for SpaceX, which has seen its AI costs balloon capital expenditure.
Wiz had previously set the record for the largest acquisition of a VC-backed company when it sold to Alphabet for $32 billion. It had also long held the record for the fastest-growing startup, reaching $100 million ARR in 18 months. Cursor beat that record as well when it reached the same revenue milestone in only 12 months.
Using PitchBook and publicly available data, the charts below put into context Cursor's meteoric rise, mapping how it keeps growing rapidly and comparing the acquisition against its VC peers.
