All eyes on the factory in Iran missile crunch

All eyes on the factory in Iran missile crunch

The Pentagon's scramble to replenish US missile stocks is making weapons production one of the clearest new investment opportunities in defense tech.

Manufacturing bottlenecks in motors, explosives and precision components—the inputs needed to build missiles at scale—are holding back production.

Yet these constraints are not holding back the flow of capital to the space. Defense-specific startup funding jumped more than 30-fold in the second quarter, to $665 million from $19.9 million in the first, according to PitchBook's Q2 2026 Defense Tech Report.

The trailing-12-month investment in hypersonics, which refers to objects that travel five times the speed of sound or faster, increased nearly 560% from a year earlier, while funding for missile and munitions companies rose nearly 440%.

The data also highlights a mismatch. Two companies—Hermeus, which is building hypersonic aircraft, and Mach Industries, which makes munitions and propulsion systems—accounted for $650 million, or almost all defense-specific investments during the quarter. But the Defense Department committed just $191 million across nine investments to expand solid-rocket-motor capacity and reduce component lead times.

That imbalance points to a manufacturing bottleneck: Investors are financing new weapons before the supplier base has shown it can produce components at high volume.

Defense tech assets are in demand as the US Army has expended "virtually all" of its available Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS) and Precision Strike Missiles during the five-month conflict with Iran, according to an Aug. 4 Reuters report.

The Pentagon says it has signed a framework agreement worth more than $3 billion to triple production of the Patriot, a road-mobile battery that shoots down aircraft; quadruple output of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system—a truck-mounted interceptor that destroys short- and medium-range ballistic missiles—and establish a second source for the solid-rocket motors that power PAC-3, the most advanced and expensive interceptor round fired from Patriot launchers.

Motors, igniters, energetic materials and specialized castings can constrain deliveries regardless of how much capital reaches vehicle developers, because each requires purpose-built facilities, licensed handling of explosive materials and qualification testing that can run for months.

Money is beginning to follow that logic. Automated manufacturer Hadrian raised $1.37 billion at a valuation approaching $8 billion this month, as demand grows for factories capable of supplying traditional contractors and defense startups.

For investors, the test is in which companies can convert emergency production agreements—which set target volumes and prices but commit no money—into funded orders and repeatable manufacturing. Until component manufacturing capacity expands, soaring valuations for missiles and hypersonics are bets on a production system that has yet to prove it can deliver.
