Oracle Gets Cheaper Only If The Megawatts Arrive

Consensus has Oracle's multiple dropping steeply by the second forward year, and what that fall rests on is not better margins but data centers the company is still building.
Oracle (ORCL) trades at about $156, or roughly 22.7 times the last twelve months of adjusted earnings, and on the earnings analysts expect two years out that falls to about 13.7 times. The question is not the size of that fall but its source: it rests not on margins improving but on data centers being finished.
Fiscal 2027 Consensus Is Just Oracle's Own Guide
On what analysts expect for fiscal 2027 the price is about 19.3 times earnings, and that year is the sturdy half of the case: consensus sits at about $8.06 a share against management's own non-GAAP guide of about $8.05. The trailing 22.7 times is adjusted on a different definition from the consensus numbers, so part of the drop from it is basis, rather than earnings. The clean comparison is between the two forward multiples, which sit on the same consensus basis. Everything past fiscal 2027 is pure forecast.
Year Two Is A Bet On Megawatts, Not On Margins
Usually a forward multiple falls because analysts assume margins climb. Here they assume the opposite: consensus has revenue growing about 39.1% a year over the two years, against 17.4% actually delivered over the trailing twelve months, with earnings growing more slowly than revenue, which is margin give-back written into the forecast. Management's own guidance agrees: fiscal 2027 gross margin steps down while the data centers ramp, and margin in the infrastructure business improves as those sites reach full contractual revenue levels.
Delivery, then, is the variable, and delivery is physical. Remaining performance obligations finished fiscal 2026 at $638 billion against trailing twelve-month revenue of $67.36 billion, and the company expects 12% of that backlog to be recognized within twelve months and another 34% between 13 and 36 months; the rest converts only as cloud infrastructure capacity lands. Oracle delivered more than 1.2 gigawatts to customers across fiscal 2026 and expects fiscal Q1 2027 to approach 1 gigawatt, close to everything it delivered in the previous four quarters combined.
The build takes an expected net cash outlay of around $70 billion in fiscal 2027, reported capex higher still, funded by around $40 billion of debt and equity that includes an already announced $20 billion equity issuance. Balance-sheet resilience through a spend cycle of that size is one of the qualities the Trefis High Quality Portfolio insists on.
The Payoff Depends On Which Multiple The Market Pays
Twenty-four analysts cover the 2028 estimate, and the low end of their range, $8.46 a share, sits barely above the roughly $8.06 expected for fiscal 2027, a case in which earnings hardly grow. At about 16.5 times the 2028 earnings, roughly halfway between the fiscal 2027 multiple and that 13.7 times floor, the shares would be worth about $188, some 20% above today's price. At the floor itself the price does not move: today's level was not an overpayment, but avoiding an overpayment is not a gain.
Against that, the stock already trades about 52% below its own 52-week high, a deeper fall than the roughly 40% peak-to-trough drops it has taken in past market shocks. Oracle is not expensive on the forward numbers; whether that forward discount is payment enough for a build this large is the question to keep testing.
What A Stock Is Worth And How Much To Own Are Different Questions
Valuation says what a stock might be worth, it says nothing about how much of your wealth should ride on it. A position that has grown large enough to matter is worth sizing deliberately rather than by accident. What a position that size would do to your net worth is exactly what the Trefis Wealth team computes, with the same rules-based systematic discipline that runs our High Quality Portfolio.
