Learning about investing can change more than a bank balance. For one person, it also changed the way they looked at everyday spending. After beginning to invest with the goal of building a better future, they admitted that almost every nonessential purchase now comes with the same thought: "That money could have been invested instead."

The investor said they weren't sure whether the habit was helping or hurting.

"I'm not saying it's a bad thing, but sometimes I wonder if I'm becoming too focused on growing my portfolio and forgetting to enjoy the present," they wrote on Reddit's r/investing recently while asking others how they balance investing with living today.

Don't Miss:

This Mindset Can Build Wealth

The responses showed that plenty of investors have gone through the same shift. Many believed it's a healthy change because it encourages people to think twice before spending.

"This is how people get richer, not poorer," a popular comment read. "Everybody should be thinking this way."

Several people said they now hesitate before making large purchases, especially when it comes to cars. One investor shared that they'd been shopping for a newer vehicle for months but kept deciding against it because their current car still ran well.

"Every time I find one that checks all the boxes, I think that it's $15K into a depreciating asset and don't even go look at it," they wrote. "If I wanted to lose money that bad, I could just buy Nike stock."

Others pointed out that wealth has been built through many different types of investing over the years, including real estate.

However, if owning rental property sounds appealing but dealing with renovations, tenants and contractors doesn't, Arrived offers another path. The platform lets you buy fractional shares in professionally selected rental properties while the company handles the day-to-day management.

Arrived selects properties with the goal of generating rental income and growing in value over time, giving you a chance to earn monthly dividends without becoming hands-on landlords. If you've been thinking about adding real estate to your portfolio, start investing through Arrived with just a few clicks and let the company take care of the rest.

Not everyone thought every dollar should be invested, though. Many said the key is having a plan before the money ever reaches your checking account.

Budgeting Can Take Away the Guilt

A common strategy was to automate investing first and then spend what's left without second-guessing every purchase.

"My saving is, 'set it and forget it,'" one commenter wrote. "I'm free to do whatever with the rest of my money."

Others recommended creating a dedicated "fun money" category in the budget. That way, vacations, hobbies and other treats are already planned for, making them easier to enjoy without feeling like they're taking away from future wealth.

Some experienced investors said this mindset can even change later in life. One person shared that younger investors often worry about every dollar, while older investors sometimes realize they've accumulated more than enough and finally feel comfortable spending.

Several people also warned against becoming so focused on building a portfolio that life passes by. As one commenter put it, "Money is a tool and not just a high score."

Building Wealth Across More Than Just the Market

Building a resilient portfolio means thinking beyond a single asset or market trend. Economic cycles shift, sectors rise and fall, and no one investment performs well in every environment. That's why many investors look to diversify with platforms that provide access to real estate, fixed-income opportunities, precious metals, and even self-directed retirement accounts. By spreading exposure across multiple asset classes, it becomes easier to manage risk, capture steady returns, and create long-term wealth that isn't tied to the fortunes of just one company or industry.
