June 12, 2026 was one of those days that felt like a turning point. SpaceX, Elon Musk's rocket and satellite company, priced its IPO at $135 per share on the Nasdaq under the ticker SPCX.

The listing was the largest in history, valuing the company at approximately $2 trillion at debut. Bitcoin was trading at approximately $67,000 the same day, quietly, without ceremony, as it always does.

Two different assets. Two different investor profiles. Same $1,000. Here is what happened.

SpaceX: Down 12.7%

A $1,000 investment in SpaceX at the IPO price of $135 bought 7.41 shares. SpaceX is currently trading at approximately $117.80, well below the IPO price and far below the all-time high of $225.64 it hit just four days after the public listing on June 16.

At today's price, those 7.41 shares are worth approximately $873, a loss of 12.7% in under eight weeks.

The decline came fast. The post-IPO euphoria faded quickly as the broader market digested a company with no earnings history, a loss per share of $2.94, and a valuation that implied decades of future growth priced in on day one.

The stock's price hit as low as $104.83 on Aug. 3, suggesting the selling pressure has not fully exhausted itself.

SpaceX reports its first public earnings on Aug. 4. Analysts expect $6.9 billion in revenue and a loss of $0.23 per share.

Trending on TheStreet Roundtable:

Bitcoin: Down 7.5%

A $1,000 investment in Bitcoin at $67,000 on June 12 bought 0.01493 BTC. At today's price of approximately $62,000, that position is worth approximately $925, a loss of 7.5%.

Bitcoin's decline over the same period reflects the same macro pressures weighing on every risk asset, rising U.S. Treasury yields, geopolitical tension, and sustained ETF outflows.

But the loss is measurably smaller than that of SpaceX. The asset that most people assumed would underperform the most exciting IPO of the decade actually held its value better.

The finding nobody predicted

While Bitcoin has lost 7.5% of its value since SpaceX's IPO day, SpaceX has lost 12.7% over the same period. The most anticipated stock debut in years underperformed a bear-market Bitcoin by more than 5%.

The 1.37 billion share lockup expiry hits on Aug. 6, two days from now, which will more than triple the current public float.

Whether that unlocks further selling pressure or gets absorbed cleanly is the question every SpaceX investor is watching this week.

Bitcoin has no lockup expiry. No insider shares waiting to be released. No first earnings report to disappoint. For now, the numbers are what they are.
