At its investor day in Chicago Wednesday morning, McDonald's was giving real "your favorite uncle announcing at Thanksgiving that he has gotten into AI" energy.
ArchIQ is what McDonald's is calling the AI-powered operating system headed for its restaurants. It comes tucked inside Restaurant > NEXT, a package of new equipment and tech, which comes tucked inside McDonald's > NEXT, its June growth plan, because Unc Mickey D has apparently also discovered the greater-than sign and now uses it like the thumbs-up emoji.
And like any uncle with a big renovation idea, he would like the kids to chip in. The upgrades take serious money from franchisees, who already remodel about once a decade and are watching beef and labor chew through their profits, so McDonald's is offering up to $8.5 billion in rent relief and actual capital through 2036, about $5 billion of it by 2030. The pitch is roughly $100,000 a year in extra cash flow for the average US restaurant and about 4 years to earn it back, a number that sounds wonderful at headquarters and will get reread slowly in back offices.

McDonald's also wants its margin line in the low-to-mid 50s by 2030, up from 46.1% in 2025, helped by shaving overhead from a forecast 2.2% of systemwide sales this year to about 1.9% and by cost cuts elsewhere Uncle Mickey D would rather not discuss.
On the menu, it wants about 1.5 more points of global market share each in chicken and drinks by 2030, and it plans to keep the beef crown planted firmly on its head the whole time it's out chasing them. Holding onto it falls to the crews. A multiyear training program called Make It Golden, built around consistency, quality, and service, starts rolling out October 5, Ray Kroc's 124th birthday, which is a lovely bit of stagecraft for the guy who turned a burger restaurant into a global giant.
Management is clearly hoping that this kind of forward guidance on getting hip with AI while reworking the balance sheet a little will pull its stock out of the 20% nosedive its taken so far in 2026. Considering the stock tumbled 4% on Wednesday morning's news, the market seems to be pricing in that consistency, quality, and serviceare 3 things no operating system has figured out how to fry yet.
