TotalEnergies, AMNI take FID on Nigeria’s Ima gas field

TotalEnergies and its Nigerian partner AMNI have taken the final investment decision (FID) for the Ima gas field, an offshore development intended to supply a liquefaction plant for the Nigeria LNG (NLNG) project.

The French energy major will operate the offshore gas project and hold a 40% interest, while AMNI will own the remaining 60%. The Ima gas field extends across the OML 112 and 117 offshore licences in shallow waters near Bonny Island.

Production is expected to begin in 2028. The Ima gas field is set to reach a plateau of 350 million cubic feet of gas per day, equivalent to more than 60,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boepd).

The field will be linked to the NLNG plant by a 22km pipeline. TotalEnergies has a 15% interest in the liquefied natural gas (LNG) project.

Once operational, the Ima gas project is expected to provide around one-third of the gas needed for NLNG's Train 7 expansion, which is intended to increase liquefaction capacity from 22 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) to 30mtpa.

The development for the Ima gas field will use a single platform and receive electricity from shore. TotalEnergies said the project would not involve flaring and include permanent methane detection and monitoring.

The company describes Ima as a low-cost and low-emissions development.

All key contractors are expected to be Nigerian companies. Around 60% of the workforce during the development phase is also expected to come from communities hosting the project.

TotalEnergies exploration and production president Nicolas Terraz said: "We are very pleased to announce the FID for the Ima gas project, marking a new milestone in the deployment of our integrated gas strategy in Nigeria.

"After the Ubeta project sanctioned in 2024 and expected to start-up next year, Ima demonstrates again our ability to unlock new low-cost and low-emissions gas resources, following the incentives introduced by the Nigerian Government for non-associated gas developments.

"This new project will contribute significantly to Nigeria LNG gas supply and create lasting value for its partners and for Nigeria."

TotalEnergies has operated in Nigeria for more than 60 years and employs in excess of 1,800 people across its business segments in the country. It produced 188,000boepd in Nigeria in 2025 and operates around 540 service stations there.

Prior to this, TotalEnergies entered into a partnership agreement with Global Infrastructure Partners, part of BlackRock, involving its interests in certain oil and gas infrastructure assets in Africa.
