Bitcoin reached an eight-month high on Monday, with the cryptocurrency peaking at $85,222 for a gain of up to 5.1%, as renewed ETF demand and improving appetite for risk assets carried forward momentum that took hold the previous week, according to Bloomberg.

The token settled at $85,117, a 4.7% advance, completing a stretch that has seen it surge more than 30% from its Aug. 19 level while tacking on close to 6% in last week's trading alone, according to The Wall Street Journal. Bitcoin has managed to stay comfortably clear of the $80,000 mark, a threshold that had repeatedly resisted upward breakthroughs in prior weeks.

Three factors underpinned the advance, according to Zaye Capital Markets analyst Naeem Aslam, writing in a note cited by the Journal: accelerating ETF inflows, favorable signals from regulators, and traders covering short positions. On the options platform Deribit, call contracts — giving holders the right to buy bitcoin — outnumbered puts by more than 272,000 to 154,000, signaling bullish positioning, according to Bloomberg.

"The crypto market capitalization has risen to $2.8T, its highest level since the end of January this year," Alex Kuptsikevich, chief market analyst at FxPro, told Bloomberg. "Buyers have once again been dominating the cryptocurrency market since Sunday."

Broader market conditions also helped. Falling oil prices and optimism ahead of a planned summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday lifted risk assets across the board, according to Bloomberg. Ether rose more than 4.3% to $2,747, while XRP, Solana, and Monero also posted gains.

"Cryptocurrencies are advancing in a group this morning, a move given strength by recent inflows and one likely to attract even more of those vital funds," Chris Beauchamp, chief market analyst at IG, told the Journal. "Perhaps investors are realizing that they can live in a world of higher U.S. rates, though falling oil prices certainly help too."

Monday's milestone builds on a recovery that has weathered two potential obstacles. Investors pushed bitcoin back above $80,000 for the first time since January earlier this year, a move analysts at the time described as a significant psychological barrier. Last week, the cryptocurrency absorbed the failure of the Clarity Act — legislation aimed at clarifying crypto regulation — as well as the Federal Reserve's first interest-rate increase in more than three years. A green light from the Securities and Exchange Commission on Thursday for digital versions of securities to begin trading in the U.S. helped lift sentiment.

Despite its recent run, bitcoin is still a significant distance from the $97,000-plus level it hit in mid-January and trails its all-time October record by an even wider margin.
