OMV to proceed with $688m Austrian hydrogen plant after Masdar exit

OMV has announced that it will continue developing its planned $688m (€600m) green hydrogen facility in Austria on its own, despite the withdrawal of its partner, Masdar.

United Arab Emirates-based Masdar had been set to invest several hundred million euros in the project. However, it has now exited the venture due to what OMV cited as "strategic changes in Abu Dhabi", according to a statement referenced by regional outlet Salzburger Nachrichten, the first to report the news.

The hydrogen production plant, due to be located in Bruck an der Leitha, Lower Austria, was initially announced as a joint venture in November last year.

OMV and Masdar had signed a binding agreement to finance, construct and operate the 140MW electrolysis facility.

Despite Masdar's departure, the project remains largely financed, with the European Investment Bank having approved a €450m loan in July and Austria's Wirtschaftsservice allocating up to €123m in production funding.

Construction of the facility started in September 2025, with operations expected to begin in 2027.

Once operational, the plant will have the capacity to produce up to 23,000 tonnes per annum (tpa) of green hydrogen, which would make it the largest such plant in Austria and one of the five largest in Europe based on capacity.

The entire production will be powered by renewable sources including wind, solar and hydroelectric energy.

Hydrogen generated at the site will be supplied through a 22km pipeline to OMV's Schwechat refinery near Vienna. This renewable hydrogen will replace fossil-based hydrogen in the refinery's processes.

OMV forecasts that the shift to green hydrogen will cut annual direct carbon dioxide emissions from the Schwechat refinery by approximately 150,000t. This is equivalent to the yearly carbon footprint of 20,000 people, or around 10% of the facility's current direct emissions, the company said.

The investment aims to make fuel and chemical production at Schwechat more sustainable, with OMV indicating that the project also establishes a foundation for the future development of sustainable aviation fuels at the site.
