QLD, Nasdaq -100 'ü Üç Katına Çıkarmak Yerine İki Katına Çıkarıyor. Bu 2X Orta Zemin, TQQQ'nun Çarpışmalardan Kurtulamamasının Nedenidir

Quick Read

  • A 2022 Nasdaq crash turned $10,000 into just $2,100 with TQQQ but preserved $3,900 with QLD's lower 2x leverage.

  • Recovering from TQQQ's 79% loss requires a 376% gain just to break even, making the extra leverage a costly bet.

  • QLD's 5-year annualized return of 17% beat TQQQ's 15% as volatility drag quietly eroded the extra leverage's advantage.

Leveraged ETFs have become an increasingly popular way to participate in the recent AI-driven technology boom. One such fund favored by investors and traders alike is the ProShares UltraPro QQQ (NASDAQ:TQQQ), an ETF that targets three times the Nasdaq's daily return. For investors who are uncomfortable with the 3x target, the ProShares Ultra QQQ (NYSEARCA:QLD) offers similar exposure but targets 2x the Nasdaq-100's daily move. When the Nasdaq is advancing higher, TQQQ seems like the obvious choice, but during a serious selloff, the reduced leverage of QLD can dramatically change the amount of capital left standing when the decline is over.

Same Index, Different Amount of Leverage

QLD and TQQQ start with essentially the same investment thesis. Both provide leveraged exposure to the Nasdaq-100, an index consisting of 100 of the largest nonfinancial companies listed on the Nasdaq. Nvidia, Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Alphabet, and other mega-cap technology companies make up a substantial portion of the underlying exposure.

The difference is leverage. Both funds generate leverage primarily through derivatives, including swaps and futures, rather than simply borrowing money to buy more stocks. QLD targets 2x the Nasdaq-100's daily return, while TQQQ uses greater derivative exposure to target 3x. The emphasis on daily is key: these are daily objectives, not promises that investors will receive exactly two or three times the index's return over months or years.

Daily resetting and compounding mean that longer-term results can differ considerably, particularly when volatility is high. ProShares specifically warns that smaller index moves combined with higher volatility tend to produce results worse than the stated daily multiple over longer periods – a phenomenon known as volatility drag.

QLD currently carries a 0.95% net expense ratio and roughly $14.1 billion in net assets. TQQQ is considerably larger at approximately $35.6 billion in net assets and charges a lower 0.82% net expense ratio.

2022 Shows Why Extra Leverage Matters

The difference becomes much clearer when the Nasdaq falls.

The Nasdaq-100 lost roughly 32% during 2022. During this time, QLD declined about 61%, while TQQQ lost roughly 79%.

Put $10,000 into each at the beginning of the year and the difference becomes harder to ignore. A roughly 61% QLD loss leaves around $3,900 remaining. A 79% TQQQ decline leaves only about $2,100.

This math matters because recovering from losses becomes exponentially harder as the drawdown grows. A portfolio falling 61% needs roughly a 156% gain just to get back to even. A 79% loss requires approximately a 376% gain.

Neither outcome is pleasant. QLD hardly qualifies as a defensive investment. But preserving an additional $1,800 or so from a $10,000 position gives the investor substantially more capital to participate in the eventual recovery.

TQQQ Still Wins When the Trend Cooperates

Giving up leverage also means forfeiting additional upside.

Through August 31, 2026, TQQQ had returned 37.1% year-to-date compared with 28.3% for QLD. Strong, relatively persistent Nasdaq rallies are exactly the environment where 3x leverage can shine.

That said, longer periods show why simply choosing the highest leverage ratio is not automatically the best strategy. QLD's five-year annualized NAV return through August was 17.29%, compared with 15.14% for TQQQ. Over 10 years, TQQQ was comfortably ahead at 40.47% annually versus QLD's 33.21%. Different combinations of market direction and volatility can therefore produce vastly different outcomes.

What This Means for You

Investors buying QLD are still making an extremely aggressive bet on the Nasdaq-100, but they stop one step short of TQQQ's maximum leverage. During powerful bull markets, this can feel like leaving money on the table. However, during the next major technology selloff, the capital that remains after the decline may matter considerably more.
