What Happened?

General Motors (GM) stock is in the news after the company unveiled its new engine lineup for the 2027 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 pickup trucks.

The lineup includes two brand-new V-8 engines, a carryover inline-six diesel engine, and an upgraded turbocharged four-cylinder option.

This is GM's sixth generation of small-block V-8 engines, a lineup the company first started building back in 1955.

GM President Mark Reuss made the announcement at the automaker's Flint Engine plant, saying the goal is simple: keep beating the competition.

Chevrolet and GMC combined have outsold Ford in full-size trucks since 2020, even though Ford's F-Series remains the single top-selling truck.

GM says development on this new engine lineup began in 2018, well before recent changes to federal EV incentives and fuel economy rules.

The numbers show why V-8 engines still matter so much to General Motors stock.

Most of GM's full-size truck sales come from V-8 models: 55% of Silverado sales and about 61% of Sierra 1500 sales.

Diesel engines make up another meaningful chunk, representing 20% of Sierra 1500 sales and 35% of Silverado 1500 sales.

This move follows a broader industry trend.

Ford also updated its engine lineup for 2027, and Ram is bringing back its Hemi V-8 after previously dropping it, a decision that hurt Ram's sales enough that the company had to reverse course.

Full-size trucks remain a huge profit center for automakers, since customers rely on them for towing and hauling, jobs that electric trucks have struggled to handle well due to reduced range under heavy loads.

There is one wrinkle worth noting.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has an open investigation into GM's current 6.2-liter V-8 over reported failures, even after a prior recall.

GM's chief engineer for global engines said the company is cooperating with regulators and is confident the new engines won't have similar issues.
