The Dow industrials and S&P 500 ended the week with losses, with the Nasdaq Composite the only major U.S. index to rise in Friday's session.

The tech-focused Nasdaq finished up 0.4% on the day and 0.7% for the week. The blue-chip Dow Jones Industrial Average ended down 0.2% Friday and 1.7% over the five sessions as it recorded a third straight losing week. The benchmark S&P 500 closed up 0.2% Friday but 0.1% lower for the week, its second consecutive in the red.

The 10-year Treasury yield, which serves as a benchmark for a wide range of interest rates, including those for mortgages, corporate bonds, and other loans, was at 5% in late-afternoon trading, up seven basis points from Thursday's close.

The Federal Reserve on Wednesday raised interest rates for the first time in three years, and investor attention has now turned to the likely path forward for rates. Per the CME FedWatch tool, traders see a 55% likelihood that the Fed will raise rates a quarter-percentage point above its new range of 3.75% to 4% at its late-October meeting, and a 90% likelihood that it will lift them by at least that amount in December.

Oil prices pulled back Friday as traders figured a Saudi Arabian pipeline closure would not affect crude supplies for long. U.S. benchmark West Texas Intermediate prices were down 2% to just below $100 a barrel around 4 p.m. ET, while Brent crude futures, the international benchmark, were 1.5% lower at $103.25.

Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.B) said legendary investor Warren Buffett was stepping down as its chairman, effective immediately, although he was named Chairman Emeritus "in recognition of his extraordinary contributions to Berkshire and its owners" and will remain a board member. Howard Buffett, his son, will take over as chairman.

"Father Time always wins," wrote Warren Buffett, who recently turned 96. Berkshire shares were up less than 1%.

Crypto-tied stocks Robinhood Markets (HOOD), Coinbase Global (COIN), and Strategy (MSTR) closed at least 9% higher as bitcoin traded around $81,200, up sharply from overnight lows around $76,200.

Shares of Apple (AAPL) ended 0.3% lower as the tech giant's iPhone 18 models and other new products debuted. The Roundhill Magnificent Seven ETF (MAGS) declined about 0.5% after closing up nearly 2% yesterday. Roundhill's Memory ETF (DRAM) and broader iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) advanced nearly 3% and 2%, building on Thursday gains.

The U.S. dollar index, which tracks the value of the greenback against a basket of foreign currencies, edged lower to 100.20. Gold futures rose 0.5% to $4,420 an ounce.

Netflix Gets a Downgrade by Wells Fargo on 'Worrying' Engagement Trends. The Stock Is Sliding

Netflix shares have taken a hit lately. One group of experts sees the streaming giant's stock falling even further.

Shares of Netflix (NFLX) closed down nearly 5% to below $72 Friday afternoon, extending their recent slide after analysts at Wells Fargo downgraded the stock. It was one of the leading decliners in the S&P 500 and Nasdaq.

Wells Fargo cut its rating of Netflix to "underweight," from neutral, and slashed its price target to $57 from $80, a new Street low well beneath the $97 consensus. Among the 14 other analysts tracked by Visible Alpha, 12 consider the stock a "buy," with two neutral ratings.

Netflix's recent engagement trends are "worrying," Wells Fargo told clients in a Friday note, citing a 8% drop in viewership time per subscriber per day in the first half of this year compared to the same period in 2023. Netflix "has lacked big original series & it's showing," the analysts wrote.

Wells Fargo said Netflix may need to undergo a "content spend reboot," warning that the company's efforts to expand into different kinds of entertainment such as games could come at the risk of "missing the watercooler originals."

Concerns around slowing revenue growth have weighed on Netflix's stock in recent months. With Friday's slump, Netflix shares have lost nearly 25% of their value since the start of the year.

SpaceX Stock Falls as Company Delays Starship Launch

SpaceX shares' two-day rally following news of a new Starship launch has come to a halt.

Shares of SpaceX—officially Space Exploration Technologies (SPCX)—are down roughly 2.5% Friday, a day after the Elon Musk-led rocket, connectivity, and AI company said it was pushing back its intended launch date for the 14th flight of Starship.

SpaceX now says it intends to launch Starship as soon as Sept. 28, with a 75-minute launch window opening at 7:15 a.m. CT. That's six days after its original launch date, which was announced earlier this week and helped its shares surge 8% over the previous two sessions.

Shares were trading a tick below $151 with an hour to go in the session, barely above the $150 level at which they opened trading in their debut June 12.

Crypto Stocks Rise Alongside Bitcoin

A number of cryptocurrency-related stocks are on the rise Friday, tracking a rise in bitcoin.

Shares of crypto exchanges Robinhood (HOOD) and Coinbase Global (COIN), stablecoin firm Circle (CRCL), and Strategy (MSTR), the largest single corporate holder of bitcoin, were up 7.5% to 12% in late-morning trading.

The sector got a bit of relief yesterday as the Securities and Exchange Commission issued some new rules for the crypto industry. The news suggested that individual federal agencies are preparing to fill in the existing regulatory gaps while federal legislation remains stalled in Congress.

Bitcoin was trading around $80,900, up from overnight lows around $76,200.

Lennar CEO Warns Homebuyers Are 'Clearly Stretching' Their Finances

One of America's biggest homebuilders is warning homebuyers are showing signs of financial strain lately.

Lennar (LEN) CEO Stuart Miller said in the company's earnings call Thursday that many homebuyers are "clearly stretching to try to afford the stability of a home," according to a transcript provided by AlphaSense.

Miller said the typical homebuyer is spending well above 30% of their gross income on a home in the face of rising mortgage rates and higher home prices amid a persistent housing shortage. The CEO said that fewer families "can afford to both produce a down payment and qualify for a mortgage" in the current housing environment.

Warren Buffett Is Stepping Down as Berkshire Hathaway's Chairman

Warren Buffett is transitioning to another role at Berkshire Hathaway, the investment giant announced this morning.

Buffett, who turned 96 last month, will become chairman emeritus and remain a member of the board. Buffett's son Howard, who has been on Berkshire's board since 1993, has been elected to replace him as its chairman.

"Serving as your Chairman has been the privilege of a lifetime, and I have never taken your trust for granted," Buffett wrote in a letter to shareholders. "Father Time always wins. He has, however, been generous with me. He has given me the opportunity to see Berkshire reach a point where I am more confident than ever about what lies ahead."

"The culture Warren built and the values he championed will remain at the heart of Berkshire, and Howard will be their guardian," Berkshire CEO Greg Abel said in a release. Abel took over the top job from Buffett at the start of the year, ending Buffett's 60-year tenure leading the conglomerate.

Under Buffett's leadership, Berkshire shares posted average annual returns of nearly 20%, roughly doubling the gains of the S&P 500 over that period. The shares, which were little changed in recent trading, have added just 1% this year so far.

On Holding Stock Jumps as Swiss Sneaker Company 'Enters Football' With Mbappé, Henry

On Holding stock has struggled mightily this year. Shareholders received some good news Friday.

The Swiss sneaker company, known mostly for its running shoes, announced it was entering the football (soccer) market with one of the sport's biggest stars, Real Madrid and France forward Kylian Mbappé—a longtime Nike (NKE) athlete—as its spokesman.

The company said Mbappé "will work directly with On's product teams, integrating his elite perspective into the development and testing of future football footwear and apparel." The Swiss firm added "he will also become a global ambassador for On, extending the partnership beyond football into movement, performance, and contemporary design."

Financial terms were not disclosed, but The Athletic reported that Mbappé was given equity in On. Swiss tennis legend Roger Federer, also a former Nike spokesman, was similarly granted equity in the company in 2019.

The company said Henry "has been working behind the scenes with the brand on every aspect of its entry and product approach since late 2025." Sydney Schertenleib, who plays for Barcelona and Switzerland, "will help shape products designed for the future of the women's game," On said.

On Holding shares jumped 6% before the bell on the news. They entered the day down more than 40% this year.

The Fed's Inflation Target Keeps Slipping Farther Into the Future

Victory in the Federal Reserve's war on inflation is just over two years away. Will it always be?

Officials at the Fed predicted inflation, as measured by the Personal Consumption Expenditures price index, will finally fall to the central bank's target of a 2% annual increase in 2029. That's later than the Federal Open Market Committee's projections in June.

Fed officials revised their forecasts on Wednesday after recent economic data showed inflation remains stubbornly high at 3.7% in July. With diesel prices surging to record highs because of the Iran war, inflation seems unlikely to subside on its own. The central bank raised its key interest rate by a quarter-point this week in a bid to blunt the steeper-than-usual consumer price increases.
