ChargePoint Just Gained 61% in a Month: Is It Too Late to Buy CHPT Stock Now?

Quick Read

  • CHPT surged 61% in a month to $9.48 with no sourced catalyst, and no earnings surprise, analyst upgrade, or financing event explains the move.

  • While CHPT soared, peers BLNK and EVGO each fell 6%, confirming this is an isolated stock move, not a sector re-rating.

  • The bull case rests on a shrinking EBITDA loss ($5M vs. $22M a year ago) and 25% growth in Networked Charging Systems revenue.

ChargePoint Holdings (NYSE:CHPT) has separated itself from the EV-charging group in a way that is hard to ignore. ChargePoint stock has gained 61% over the past month while every listed comparator in this piece moved the other way, and no verified company-specific catalyst on record here accounts for the run.

The SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (NYSEARCA:SPY) is down 1% over the same month, so the broad market's mild slip didn't lift ChargePoint. That frames how unusual the divergence is: ChargePoint's advance isn't a rising-market effect being amplified inside a small-cap name.

ChargePoint stock is at $9.48, up 6% in Thursday afternoon trading, adding to the monthly surge rather than giving it back. That the buying continues today is why the "too late" question has weight at all, and why this piece is worth writing rather than closing with a shrug.

A Rally Without a Sourced Catalyst

The material on record for this article doesn't include an earnings surprise, guidance change, analyst action, financing, partnership or reverse split that lands inside the window in question. The plain read is that the gain is real and specific to ChargePoint, and this piece can't source what caused it.

Learn 13 Major Retirement Mistakes and Ways To Avoid Them

One investment mistake could create big risks for your retirement. Many investors make the same critical errors: being too conservative, making big bets on "sure things," or paying excessive fees. Any of those blunders can endanger your hard-earned savings.

What is on record is ChargePoint's Q2 FY2027 report from earlier in September, when the company posted revenue of $116.08 million, up 17.7% year over year, with non-GAAP gross margin reaching 38%. CEO Rick Wilmer called it "an exceptional quarter for ChargePoint" on the earnings call, and management pointed to early access shipments of the Express Solo DC fast charger, an expanded Eaton partnership and continued cost discipline. That result is context for the month, not a same-day trigger, and the stock's run has continued well after those numbers were digested.

EV-Charging Peers Went the Other Way

To put ChargePoint's month in context, its direct listed peer stocks went the other way. Blink Charging (NASDAQ:BLNK) is down 6% over the past month. EVgo (NASDAQ:EVGO) is also down 6% over the same window, cutting against ChargePoint's direction as well.

The wider category tells the same story. The Global X Autonomous & Electric Vehicles ETF (NASDAQ:DRIV) is down 6% over the past month, and its holdings span automakers, batteries and semiconductors rather than charging pure-plays. ChargePoint's advance isn't a sector re-rating, because the sector wasn't re-rated inside the same window.

Is It Too Late to Buy CHPT?

The case that it's late starts with the size of the move. A one-month gain of that magnitude in a single-digit stock prices in a great deal of improvement before any of it has been demonstrated, and a gain no one can attribute is a gain that can reverse without an announcement either. ChargePoint carried a shareholders' deficit of -$36.1 million and cash of $95.33 million into the run, so the balance sheet hasn't caught up to the stock.

A counterargument is that ChargePoint is still a single-digit stock, and the advance didn't come with the sector. That's what a genuine re-rating of one company looks like rather than a group trade, and the Q2 non-GAAP adjusted EBITDA loss of $5 million is a much smaller hole to climb out of than the prior-year quarter's $22 million. Networked Charging Systems revenue also grew 25% year over year to $62.9 million in the same quarter, so the underlying business isn't standing still. A reader weighing ChargePoint here is really deciding whether they believe the decoupling is justified by something not yet public.

What to Watch

Traders can watch for whether ChargePoint stock holds above the levels that produced this month's gain into next week, since a move built on no sourced catalyst is the kind that gives ground quickly once buying pauses. Any position in ChargePoint should be sized to survive that reversal, and averaging in over multiple sessions is usually kinder to a portfolio than chasing a stock that just ran this hard.

Shareholders may want to keep an eye on whether ChargePoint files or announces anything in the coming sessions that would retroactively explain the run. Until such a disclosure appears, the fair label for ChargePoint stock's month is a single-company move without a public reason, and readers should size their exposure to it accordingly.
