SEG Solar has announced production of the first heterojunction (HJT) solar module at its Tomball #1 manufacturing facility in the Greater Houston area of Texas, US.

The milestone marks the beginning of commercial-scale HJT module output at SEG Solar's second US facility.

With this development, the company's total module production capacity in North America has increased to 6GW annually.

The Tomball #1 plant, which opened last month, represents an investment of $200m and spans more than 500,000ft².

It is equipped to produce 4GW of modules each year across four production lines, primarily focusing on SEG Solar's SIERRA N series HJT modules, which utilise both 210mm and 210R wafer formats.

Manufacturing at Tomball #1 incorporates end-to-end digital management, including AI-enabled inspection and advanced production scheduling tools, as well as automation equipment designed to support product quality, traceability and operational efficiency.

The site also relies on specialised processes such as low-temperature soldering and precision butyl sealant application, features intended to enhance module durability and energy output.

According to the company, HJT technology offers higher bifaciality, a lower temperature coefficient and reduced degradation, contributing to higher lifetime energy yields than conventional photovoltaic modules.

SEG Solar reported plans to advance HJT technology with ongoing efforts in product optimisation and efficiency, aiming to support wider adoption of the technology.

The company has also begun constructing another US-based HJT module manufacturing facility with 4.6GW of planned annual capacity, expected to be operational in 2027. It would bring the company's total US manufacturing capacity to more than 10.6GW.

A further project to add domestic cell production is targeted for 2028.

SEG Solar CEO Jim Wood said: "Facing the new policy challenges, SEG has doubled down on American manufacturing. With Tomball #1 online and our domestic supply chain fully traceable, we are accelerating toward our goal of becoming America's largest crystalline silicon module manufacturer."

SEG Solar, founded in 2021, serves utility, commercial and residential solar markets.

"SEG Solar begins production of HJT modules at new Tomball facility" was originally created and published by Power Technology, a GlobalData owned brand.
