Portfolio Fit: SKHQ

Fri, September 18, 2026 at 6:20 PM GMT+3 5 min read

Quick Read

  • SKHQ delivers 2x daily inverse exposure to SK Hynix, dropping 25% in its first two weeks as the memory stock rallied on AI demand.

  • SK Hynix's HXSCL ADR drives SKHQ's return engine, but daily compounding drift can erode value even when the underlying ends a week flat.

  • SKHQ fits tactical trades sized in basis points with a predefined exit, not long-term bearish bets or retirement accounts.

Betting against a red-hot memory chip stock used to require a margin account, an options approval level, or access to Korean shares. The Leverage Shares 2X Short SK Hynix Daily ETF (CBOE:SKHQ) collapses that trade into a single US-listed ticker. SKHQ is engineered to move roughly twice the inverse of SK Hynix's daily price change, which makes it a tactical instrument for traders who think the HBM cycle is peaking, or for semiconductor investors who want to hedge a concentrated long book without unwinding it. The catch is the word daily. SKHQ is a short-term trading tool designed for intraday and multi-day directional bets.

What SKHQ Is Actually Built to Do

SK Hynix, the Korean memory giant behind much of the world's high-bandwidth memory going into AI accelerators, trades in the US primarily through the HXSCL ADR. SKHQ takes that single-stock exposure and inverts it with 2x daily leverage. The fund is issued through Leverage Shares by Themes and listed on the CBOE, sitting in the same category of single-stock leveraged and inverse products popularized by Direxion and GraniteShares.

The return engine is a daily swap-based reset that targets negative two times the underlying's one-day return. That mechanic is the whole product. It also drives the biggest structural risk, which is compounding drift over multi-day holding periods. In a choppy tape, SKHQ can lose value even when SK Hynix ends a week roughly flat, because each day's leverage is calculated off a new base.

Because the fund is brand new, several key line items that normally anchor a portfolio-fit review are not yet reported in fund databases. Expense ratio, NAV, and holdings snapshots are not populated, and the SEC filing on record is the 497K summary prospectus. Investors should pull the current expense ratio directly from the prospectus before sizing a position, because single-stock leveraged ETFs typically carry fees materially higher than plain-vanilla sector funds.

Does It Deliver on the Thesis

There is not enough trading history to grade SKHQ on trailing returns in any meaningful way. Only 11 trading days of data are available, with the fund pricing at $10.70 as of September 17, 2026 versus a $14.20 start on September 2, 2026. That is a 24.62% drawdown in the fund's first two weeks of existence, including a 9.46% single-day decline on September 17. In plain terms, SK Hynix has been ripping higher on continued AI memory demand, and a 2x short product is doing exactly what the label promises: losing money quickly when the underlying rallies.

The one-week snapshot tells the same story in reverse. SKHQ was up 3.52% between September 10 and September 17, meaning it captured some of a short-term pullback in the stock. That is the pattern to expect from this vehicle. Sharp positive returns on down days for SK Hynix, brutal losses on up days, and volatility decay eating into any position held longer than the trader intended.

Notably, Leverage Shares also rolled out a companion product. Its 1X Short SK Hynix Daily ETF was announced on September 2, 2026, giving investors an unleveraged version of the same short exposure. For most portfolio use cases, that 1x sibling is the more defensible choice.

Tradeoffs Investors Need to Price In

  • Compounding drift. Held for more than a few sessions, SKHQ's return will diverge, sometimes sharply, from a straight 2x inverse of SK Hynix over the same period. In a volatile stock like a Korean memory name, the decay can be severe.

  • Single-stock concentration. This is concentrated exposure to a single Korean issuer, with idiosyncratic risk around HBM contract wins, NVIDIA (NASDAQ:NVDA) order flow, DRAM pricing, and Korean regulatory and currency factors.

  • Track record and liquidity. With 11 trading days of history and no reported AUM, bid/ask spreads and market-maker depth are unproven. Size positions accordingly and use limit orders.

  • Fee opacity. Until the current expense ratio is confirmed against the prospectus on file with the SEC, assume it is meaningfully higher than a standard sector ETF.

Where SKHQ Fits, and Where It Does Not

SKHQ is a satellite instrument best used for tactical exposure rather than as a core holding or portfolio building block. It fits an active trader running a directional view on SK Hynix over hours or a few days, or a semiconductor-heavy investor who wants a short-dated hedge against a specific catalyst such as an earnings report or a DRAM pricing update. Position sizing should be small, measured in basis points of the portfolio rather than percentage points, with a predefined exit.

It does not fit anyone building a long-term bearish thesis on memory. For that view, an unleveraged short position, put options with a defined expiry, or the sister 1X Short SK Hynix Daily ETF will produce a cleaner outcome without the daily-reset math working against the holder. And it has no place at all in a retirement account being managed for compounding. SKHQ is a scalpel. Treat it that way.
