Key Takeaways

  • Intel and SK Hynix shares rose Wednesday on a report of a potential U.S. chipmaking partnership.

  • SK Hynix has discussed leasing space at a facility Intel is building in Ohio, Reuters reported.

Investors are sending shares of a pair of semiconductor giants higher in the wake of a report they could soon strike a chipmaking deal in the U.S.

Shares of Intel (INTC) and SK Hynix (SKHY) were up about 5.5% and 3%, respectively, in recent trading following a report that SK Hynix is considering a partnership with Intel to make its memory chips in the U.S. for the first time.

SK Hynix has discussed leasing some of the manufacturing space at a massive facility Intel is building in Ohio, Reuters reported this morning, citing several people familiar with the talks. Another form of the deal could see SK Hynix form a joint venture with Intel and some of its cloud customers that are buying up its memory chips as fast as they can be made, the report said.

No details of an agreement have been finalized yet, and a move to produce some of SK Hynix's most advanced memory chips in the U.S. could face opposition from the South Korean government. Such a deal would aid SK Hynix's efforts to boost production to meet soaring demand for memory chips, along with Intel's goals of expanding its U.S. manufacturing footprint.

An Intel spokesperson told Investopedia that the company does not comment on "speculation," but said it is "committed to Ohio, and we continue with our investments to accelerate the site readiness."

SK Hynix said in a statement that the company is "exploring various options to strengthen its global competitiveness, but no specific plans or arrangements have been finalized at this time."

With Wednesday's gains, SK Hynix's U.S.-listed shares have climbed about 20% from the memory chipmaker's initial public offering price back in July. Intel shares, meanwhile, have nearly tripled in value this year, though they've pulled back from their June record.

UPDATE: This story has been updated to include a statement from SK Hynix.
