Rackspace’s Nvidia Partnership Sparks Early Rally, But a $2.8 Billion Debt Load Remains

Rackspace’s Nvidia Partnership Sparks Early Rally, But a $2.8 Billion Debt Load Remains

Rackspace Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ:RXT) shares climbed more than 6% after the company announced that it was joining Nvidia's Cloud Partner Program. The move adds to a series of AI infrastructure partnerships that have consistently triggered sharp rallies in the stock. However, the market has also seen the other side of this story. Earlier this year, the stock suffered one of its biggest single-day declines when a similar AI-driven story was followed by a guidance cut and a dilutive capital raise. That contrast is becoming hard to ignore. Rackspace's AI partnership can drive the stock higher quickly, while its balance sheet continues to move in the opposite direction at a much slower pace.

Rackspace’s Nvidia Partnership Lifts Shares, But a $2.8 Billion Debt Load Remains

Rackspace Adds Nvidia to Its Sovereign AI Push

The company has entered Nvidia's Cloud Partner Program, aiming to strengthen its role in delivering and managing Nvidia-powered AI computing for regulated and sovereign enterprises.

CEO Gajen Kandiah described the partnership as:

AI sovereignty is ultimately about control: control of your data, your models, and the intelligence your organization creates. NVIDIA provides the accelerated computing foundation, and Rackspace brings the infrastructure, engineering, and operations required to run it in production. For organizations where governance, sovereignty, and uptime are non-negotiable, our role is to make that entire system work and remain accountable for the outcome.

Alongside the partnership, Rackspace Technology also introduced its Institutional Sovereign Pod, an architecture that combines Nvidia's Blackwell technology with Palantir's Foundry and AIP platforms to support governed AI infrastructure. The company said its forward-deployed engineering and managed operations are designed to help customers move from deployment into production more quickly.

A Familiar Pattern, An Unresolved Balance Sheet

Rackspace's recent stock performance highlights the gap between AI-related enthusiasm and its underlying financial position. Shares jumped in May after the company announced a non-binding MOU with AMD. The stock then collapsed 33.6% in a single day in July following a guidance cut and an at-the-market program allowing it to sell up to $250 million of shares. The balance sheet remains a major concern, with roughly $2.8 billion of debt, and negative equity. Free cash flow was negative as well. The Nvidia partnership faces a similar issue to the AMD agreement, as the company has not disclosed a customer contract or revenue commitment tied to the deal.

The sovereign and regulated AI infrastructure market is a legitimate strategic niche for Rackspace. But the company's performance this year has also shown how quickly the market can reverse an AI-driven rally when attention returns to its debt maturities and shrinking legacy operations. The Nvidia partnership does not address either of those underlying challenges.

Institutional interest in Rackspace increased sharply, with hedge fund ownership rising to 22 funds at the end of Q2 2026 from 8 funds at the end of Q1 2026. At the same time, short interest remains extremely high at 22.19% of float as of August 31, 2026. The wide gap between rising hedge fund ownership and heavy short interest suggests conviction is building on both sides of the trade.
