Elon Musk Says AI Data Centers Are Lowering Electricity Prices for Consumers. Here’s What We Found When We Ran the Numbers.

Quick Read

  • Southern Company (SO) and Vistra (VST) both profited from AI power demand, yet VST shares are down 30% over the past year.

  • U.S. electricity prices climbed 4% over the past year, outpacing headline inflation and directly contradicting Musk's claim that AI data centers lower consumer bills.

  • The $180 annual savings Musk cited applies to one Georgia utility's contract; new AI-driven generation will land in rate bases all ratepayers fund.

At 10:18 a.m. ET on Monday, Elon Musk told his audience that "AI data centers resulting in lower electricity prices for consumers" and pointed to a post claiming Georgia Power's new large-load contracts, overwhelmingly data centers, will save customers nearly a billion dollars, erasing about $180 per year from their bills. The post reached more than 503,000 impressions. Twelve days earlier, West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey made the same argument on CNBC, saying net electricity prices will be lower when data centers come in. It is becoming an industry talking point. It is also colliding with the price data Americans actually pay.

What the National Scoreboard Says

The Consumer Price Index for electricity in the U.S. city average was 305.444 in August 2026, up from 293.388 in September 2025, a rise of about 4.1%. Over the same stretch, headline CPI rose 3.4%. Electricity is outpacing headline inflation. The average U.S. price of electricity was 19.6 cents per kilowatt-hour in August 2026, up from 18.8 cents in September 2025, with the year's high of 19.8 cents set in June 2026, near a record in the series. The Energy Information Administration's own May outlook projected residential rates would average 18.2 cents per kilowatthour in 2026, a nearly 5% increase from 2025, with East Coast regions running 5% to 7% average annual growth between 2024 and 2027, driven partly by spending to accommodate rising power demand.

What the Utilities Themselves Are Reporting

Southern Company (NYSE:SO), the Georgia Power parent, told investors on its July 30, 2026 earnings call that data-center usage was 55% higher than in the second quarter of 2025 and that Georgia Power signed a 3.2 gigawatt, 25-year contract for electric service with OpenAI near Savannah. The company now has over 17 gigawatts of contracts and large-load agreements expected by the mid-2030s, with a prospective pipeline well above 75 gigawatts. Chief Executive Chris Womack framed the Georgia deals as a rate-stability story, saying large-load minimum bills cover at least 100% of the incremental cost to serve and that retail base rates in Georgia and Alabama are held stable until 2029. Meanwhile, in the same quarter, residential kilowatt-hour sales declined 1.5% while commercial sales, the data-center bucket, surged 7.3%. Households are using less power and, in most of the country, paying more per unit for it.

The merchant side of the market tells the same story from the other direction. Vistra (NYSE:VST), the independent power producer whose stock became a proxy for the AI power trade, told investors on its August 7, 2026 call that year-to-date ERCOT wholesale prices were $30 per megawatt hour, and that "$30 is not going to get new stuff built" because the price of equipment in some cases has doubled, if not tripled. Large-load customers, the company said, are willing to pay a premium for existing generation because it remains a discount to what new build costs. Vistra's Q2 Ongoing Operations Adjusted EBITDA jumped more than 30% year over year to $1.77 billion on higher realized energy and capacity prices. Rising wholesale prices are the tailwind.

Market Irony Cuts Both Ways

Even the trade built on this thesis has stopped paying. Vistra shares are down 30.21% over the past year and down 11.95% year to date to $141.63. Southern Company is up just 2.12% year to date. The Georgia Power $180 figure Musk amplified applies to a specific contract structure at a single regional utility, well removed from the bills consumers open in New Jersey, Ohio, or California. If the merchant generators aren't the cleanest way to play the buildout, the picks-and-shovels layer (power, cooling, networking) may be, and we sketched seven of those names in a free report on the AI infrastructure trade. The signal to watch is the September electricity CPI print and the Alabama and Georgia RFP results due by year-end: generation selected through those RFPs is not currently in Southern's capital forecast, and whatever gets built will land in a rate base that ratepayers, not hyperscalers alone, ultimately fund.
