John Deere workers just rejected a proposed two-year contract extension, leaving their current labor agreement set to expire October 31, 2027. For a longtime worker already thinking about retirement, though, another date in Deere's benefit plan may be worth considerably more.
Picture a hypothetical machinist with more than 25 years at John Deere (NYSE: DE). His knees are done, his spouse is ready, and October 2027 feels like the natural exit. He would still be leaving before the current labor agreement expires. That could be one month too late.
Under Deere's current benefit plan, an eligible employee who retires between October 1, 2021 and September 30, 2027 receives a retirement bonus based on completed service. Ten to 24 years is worth $37,500. At 25 years or more, the amount rises to $50,000. Retire September 30 and the current language puts him inside that window. Retire October 1 and it does not.
Deere's Contract Has Two Clocks
That one-month gap is exactly why retirement dates deserve more scrutiny than they usually get. Deere's labor agreement runs through the end of October 2027, but the $50,000 retirement-bonus window closes a month earlier. A worker looking only at the contract expiration could reasonably think an October retirement still gets him out before bargaining starts again. The benefit plan is keeping a different calendar.

The bonus is also tied to retirement eligibility under the plan. Deere permits early retirement under several routes, including at age 60 with at least 10 years of service credit or with 30 or more years of service credit regardless of age. For someone already eligible and preparing to leave, September 30 is therefore more than another date in a 553-page benefit document. It can be a $50,000 line.
$50,000 Can Buy Social Security Time
The bonus becomes especially interesting for someone deciding when to start Social Security. For workers born in 1960 or later, full retirement age (FRA) is 67. Filing at 62 can reduce the retirement benefit by as much as 30% compared with waiting until FRA. Waiting beyond FRA adds delayed retirement credits through age 70.
Take someone entitled to $2,000 a month at 67. Claiming at 62 would put the starting benefit around $1,400. Waiting until 70 would raise it to roughly $2,480 before future cost-of-living adjustments. A $50,000 retirement payment does not automatically make waiting the better choice. But it gives the worker another source of cash for the period between the last paycheck and the first Social Security check. That can change the conversation considerably. (We boiled the 62 versus 67 versus 70 question onto a single page in a free claiming framework here.)
Before Circling the Last Day
A longtime Deere worker does not need to memorize hundreds of pages of benefit language. He does need to identify the dates that put real money on either side of his retirement. Before giving notice, these three details matter:
-
Check the retirement-bonus deadline. Under the current Deere language, September 30, 2027 is the cutoff for the $37,500 or $50,000 bonus.
-
Confirm retirement eligibility and service credit. Twenty-five completed years separates the two bonus amounts, while the pension plan has its own age and service rules.
-
Then make the Social Security decision. Once the worker knows what cash and pension benefits actually come with the exit, he can decide whether Social Security needs to begin immediately.
The current Deere contract gives workers until the end of October 2027. For someone eyeing the $50,000 retirement bonus, the calendar runs out a month sooner.
