Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) is the rare mega-cap where the operating story has accelerated while the stock has drifted. AWS just posted its fastest growth in 18 quarters at 36.7%, the advertising business is a $19.8 billion quarterly line growing 26%, and the chips unit is already at a $25 billion annualized run rate.
Yet shares are up just 9.13% year to date to $251.89. The question I want to answer: can Amazon stock actually hit $300?
What's Holding Amazon Back Right Now
The fundamentals are accelerating while the stock has stalled. Amazon has fallen 7.49% over the past month and 2.71% over the past week, giving back most of the summer's post-earnings pop.
Two things are weighing on sentiment. First, capital spending. Amazon guided to roughly $200 billion in 2026 capex for AI infrastructure (that spend flows straight to the power, cooling, and networking suppliers we profiled in a free report on the AI buildout), and trailing free cash flow has turned negative at $7.6 billion.
Second, a headline overhang. Shares fell after news that an inquiry into a fatal Miami plane crash involving Amazon operations ramped up.
With a beta of 1.443, Amazon amplifies market wobbles, and it's currently sitting well below its 52-week high of $287.20. The setup is a classic case of investors punishing near-term cash burn while ignoring the long-duration revenue being contracted.

Wall Street Sees 30% Upside. Our Model Sees More
The Street is loud and bullish. The consensus target sits at $328.17, backed by 15 strong buys, 44 buys, and just 2 holds, with zero sells. Our internal model goes further, targeting $353.36 for a 40.29% upside, with high confidence at 0.9.
Here's where I push back on the consensus: it may actually be too cautious. The bullish analyst share is 97%, yet 2026 EPS estimates have been revised sharply higher, from $8.66 ninety days ago to $12.57 today, with 48 upward revisions against just 1 downward revision in the past month.
Targets tend to lag estimates. If numbers keep moving up, price targets follow.
Mapping the Path to $300 Per Share
Let's do the math. Reaching $300 from today's price of $251.89 would require a gain of 19.1%. With forward EPS of $14.42, a $300 print implies a forward P/E of 21x.
Our base case of $353.36 already implies 20x, meaning the $300 target requires only about 1x of additional multiple expansion off the current forward multiple. That is a low bar for a business compounding operating income at 43.24% year over year.
The bull case writes itself. AWS backlog stands at $496 billion, growing triple digits. CEO Andy Jassy told investors, "AWS is booming, growing 36.7% year-over-year in Q2, our fastest growth in 18 quarters, and our AI and Chips businesses each eclipsed run rates of more than $25 billion."
Add the Qualcomm warrant deal giving Amazon rights to acquire $4 billion of chipmaker stock as part of an AI infrastructure agreement, and the flywheel widens. The primary risk is that the $200 billion capex build creates a free cash flow air pocket that spooks investors before monetization catches up.
Where Amazon Trades Today vs Its Earnings Power
At $251.89 against $14.42 in forward EPS, Amazon trades at a forward multiple of 18x. That is a discount to its own five-year average and looks cheap next to a business printing 19.6% revenue growth with expanding operating margins.
Shares sit between the 52-week low of $196 and high of $287.20, with room to reclaim the top of the range before any re-rating even needs to happen. Over the past decade, Amazon has delivered a 553% return. A move to $300 would simply restore the trend.
Is $300 Realistic? Here's My Take
A move to $300 requires a 19.1% gain from here and a forward multiple of 20.8x. That is realistic and well within reach.
Three things need to go right: AWS growth needs to stay above 30%, Q3 needs to land at the high end of the $22.5 billion to $26.5 billion operating income guide, and the market has to accept that capex today funds a business Jassy believes can become a trillion-dollar annual revenue segment.
What derails it is a sudden AI capex reset that forces hyperscalers to justify spend faster than customers can absorb capacity. Returns at this level shouldn't be expected every year, but we've outlined the blueprint for how Amazon could reach $300 in 2026.
