Wall Street got a whiplash lesson in AI narrative management on Wednesday, September 9. In under three hours, the same decade was pitched as a doubling of global output and as an extinction deadline. The AI trade barely blinked.
At 10:01 a.m. ET, Elon Musk posted that "AI+robots will more than double the global economy in less than 10 years". Two hours later, CNBC's Fast Money aired a segment on researcher Jacob Coxson resigning from Anthropic, accusing it and OpenAI of racing toward superintelligence at the expense of human safety, with an Anthropic safety lead putting the odds of human extinction in the next decade above 10% without a course correction.
By 1:07 p.m. ET, Chamath Palihapitiya replied to Bill Gurley's AI doomerism post: "the appropriate reaction here is to calm down and carry on."
The market's verdict? NVIDIA (NASDAQ:NVDA) slipped 1.4% and sits up 29% over the past year and 18% year to date. The same Anthropic warning about the machine committed to 1 gigawatt of Grace Blackwell and Vera Rubin compute on NVIDIA. That is the trade: the labs sounding alarms are the customers writing the checks. I've owned NVIDIA for over 15 years, and the pattern holds. If you believe the doubling case, you own the picks and shovels. If you believe the doom case, watch for the first credible "kill switch" regulation to hit compute permits. Both roads run through Jensen's order book.
