Walmart adds Papa Johns to its growing delivery business

Add Papa Johns to the list of restaurant brands you can get delivered by Walmart.

The retail giant said Thursday that it will soon deliver pizza and other items from Papa Johns to consumers' doorsteps across the country.

It marks the first time Walmart will deliver from restaurants not located within its stores, adding momentum to the retailer's upstart restaurant delivery business.

The company last week announced that it will offer delivery from Dunkin' locations within its four walls, and will later expand that service to the majority of non-Walmart Dunkin's. Earlier this summer, it began delivering from Subway outlets inside Walmarts.

The moves have quickly established Walmart as a potential contender in the restaurant delivery business, which has for years been dominated by third-party delivery apps DoorDash, Uber Eats, and Grubhub.

The company said offering restaurant delivery gives customers another reason to shop with Walmart. The nation's largest retailer sells a wide range of products, from groceries to household goods, clothing, and tires.

And customers are increasingly shopping at Walmart online and having their items delivered that same day. Last quarter, store-fulfilled delivery sales — meaning orders handled by Walmart stores and not warehouses — increased by 43% year over year.

"Adding Papa Johns brings even more variety and convenience to that experience, giving customers the option to order a favorite like pizza alongside the everyday items they already count on Walmart for," said Greg Cathey, Walmart's SVP of ecommerce fulfillment innovation, in a statement.

Eligible customers can find Papa Johns on the Restaurants tab on Walmart's website and app. They'll be able to choose from pizzas, wings, sandwiches, sides, and desserts, and can bundle their meal with whatever else they're buying from Walmart. They can also order Papa Johns on its own.

The orders will be fulfilled by Walmart Express Delivery, which promises delivery in one or two hours. Deliveries are handled by either in-store drivers or gig workers from Walmart's Spark courier network.

For Papa Johns, Walmart gives the pizza chain a large new delivery provider with a massive audience. Walmart has more than 4,000 stores nationwide and has said that 90% of the population lives within 10 miles of one of those stores.

The chain sees it as an opportunity to reach more customers, said Chris Lyn-Sue, Papa Johns' global chief marketing officer, in a statement.

"By bringing our focus on quality to Walmart Express Delivery, we're giving customers an opportunity to try Papa Johns in new occasions as they shop, while also introducing the brand to new people," he said.

Walmart will add Papa Johns delivery in "select markets" this fall and plans to expand to thousands of locations nationwide.

Atlanta-based Papa Johns is the fourth-largest U.S. pizza chain, with more than 3,000 locations nationwide. It was the first major pizza chain to embrace third-party delivery, partnering with DoorDash in 2019, and has since joined all of the major delivery marketplaces.

It has struggled recently amid a difficult market for chain-restaurant pizza. Last quarter, same-store sales declined 8.3%, with executives citing a softer consumer environment and a promotion-heavy fast-food market.
