Cognizant Says AI Creates Jobs, Its Own Restructuring Says Otherwise

Cognizant Technology Solutions Corporation (NASDAQ:CTSH) is presenting itself as a key supporter of the American workforce in the AI era. The company is promising to hire U.S. graduates and create thousands of new AI-focused positions. Yet that message comes only months after reports indicated that the company plans to eliminate 12,000-15,000 jobs globally, most of them in India, as part of a restructuring centered on AI-powered service delivery. This creates a clear tension between the company's claim that AI will generate more jobs than it destroys and its own large-scale workforce reduction.

Cognizant Says AI Creates Jobs, Its Own Restructuring Says Otherwise

Cognizant Frames Itself as a Builder of the American AI Workforce

Research cited by Cognizant estimates that AI could drive $4.5 trillion in U.S. labor productivity and add $1 trillion in economic value over the coming decade. To help capture that opportunity, the company plans to hire 1,500 U.S. college graduates and expand its combined "Frontier Certified Engineer" and "Frontier Business Operator" workforce to 15,000 people. University and apprenticeship partnerships are expected to play a key role in developing that talent pipeline. Cognizant has also joined RAISE US, a bipartisan coalition seeking to mobilize $1 billion for worker retraining. The company's Synapse skilling initiative has already exceeded its one-million-person training target, reaching the goal one year earlier than planned. The result led it to double its target to two million people by 2030.

Ravi Kumar S, Chief Executive Officer of Cognizant, remarked:

We are hiring American graduates, standing up new American job categories for the AI era, and putting Cognizant's capital and leadership behind a national coalition built to make sure this transition works for workers. We believe AI will create significantly more jobs than it displaces and shift greater value, wages, and accountability to the frontlines of America's workforce. The opportunity now is to build those pathways quickly, so American workers and enterprises capture that value first.

The Same AI Shift Is Driving Layoffs Elsewhere

Earlier this year, Cognizant disclosed "Project Leap," a restructuring program that is expected to eliminate 12,000-15,000 positions worldwide, or around 4-5% of its total workforce. The reductions are directly linked to the company's shift toward AI-powered service delivery. More than 250,000 Cognizant employees are located in India, making the country a major part of this workforce shift and putting the traditional junior-engineer "pyramid model" under increasing pressure. Cognizant is not alone in making these changes, as peers such as Oracle and TCS have also announced AI-linked workforce reductions. At the same time, the company's latest research highlights the scale of the potential impact, showing that 93% of jobs face at least some form of AI-driven disruption.

Cognizant is making real investments in U.S. hiring and employee skilling, but its broader workforce strategy tells a more complicated story. The company is also using AI-powered delivery as a reason to reduce jobs elsewhere. That creates a clear gap in the message that AI will ultimately create more opportunities than it destroys.

Hedge fund ownership of Cognizant Technology Solutions Corporation (NASDAQ:CTSH) slipped modestly, with the number of hedge funds holding the stock falling from 50 at the end of Q1 2026 to 48 at the end of Q2 2026. As of August 14, 2026, short interest reached 7.9% of the float. Together, these signals reflect mixed investor sentiment around the stock.
