(Bloomberg) -- Nike Inc.'s investor relations team is clearing up any doubts ahead of the company's removal from the S&P 100 Index.

While the sportswear company is about to leave that index for the first time in nearly 18 years, it will remain part of the larger S&P 500 Index, according to a memo sent to executives that was reviewed by Bloomberg News.
"You have likely seen headlines or social media commentary about Nike Inc.'s removal from the S&P 100 Index," the memo said. "Because some of the coverage may be confusing, we wanted to provide a few facts and talking points for discussions with your teams."
Nike "remains a member of the S&P 500, and this change does not affect our business, strategy, operations, or public listing," the investor relations and communications team wrote.
The company declined to comment.
S&P Dow Jones Indices announced late last week that Nike will be removed from the S&P 100 on Sept. 21, along with Honeywell Aerospace Inc., Simon Property Group and Colgate-Palmolive Co. The quartet will be replaced by Dell Technologies Inc., Palo Alto Networks Inc., Arista Networks Inc. and Sandisk Corp.
The index undergoes quarterly adjustments, and Nike has been a member since the end of 2008.
Nike is being removed following the stock's sustained decline. The shares have fallen more than 40% so far this year and are headed for a fifth consecutive annual drop. Nike's current market capitalization of $55 billion is a fraction of the all-time high of $281 billion reached in November 2021.
Both the S&P 100 and 500 have gained in 2026 and are poised for a fourth straight annual increase.
Rebalancing events are closely watched by investors as they can force large amounts of buying and selling by passive funds that track indexes. The iShares S&P 100 ETF, which tracks the S&P 100 Index, has about $20 billion of total assets and holds about $19 million worth of Nike shares, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.
That pales in comparison to the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF which tracks the S&P 500 Index and has more than $1 trillion of assets. It holds more than $700 million worth of Nike shares. A comparable State Street fund holds around $560 million in Nike shares, while the iShares Core S&P 500 ETF holds about $575 million.
