Synopsys (SNPS) shares are in focus after senior Morgan Stanley analyst Lee Simpson issued a bullish research note in favor of the electronic design automation company. Simpson upgraded the multinational on Sept. 8 to "Overweight" and maintained his price target at $500, indicating potential upside of roughly 25% from current levels.

The bullish report arrives at a time when Synopsys stock is grappling to regain investor interest, currently down about 15% versus its August high.

Why Morgan Stanley Upgraded Synopsys Stock

Lee Simpson turned bullish on SNPS primarily because of the progress it has made following its acquisition of engineering simulation firm Ansys.

In his report, the analyst expressed confidence in the post-merger integration, noting that combining Synopsys's core silicon design software with Ansys's advanced multi-physics analysis tools creates an unmatched end-to-end design platform.

As integration risks recede, he expects meaningful margin expansion driven by operational cost synergies and cross-selling opportunities across complex chip and system manufacturing markets.

All in all, this unified software stack reinforces SNPS shares' competitive moat as custom silicon development expands across hyperscalers and automotive original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).

AI Is a Major Tailwind for SNPS Shares

In his research note, Simpson also highlighted Synopsys shares' strong exposure to a secular tailwind in physical AI and custom chip architecture.

As tech giants move toward proprietary in-house semiconductors to support artificial intelligence workloads, demand for sophisticated Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tools and Intellectual Property (IP) blocks continues to accelerate.

This momentum was evident in Synopsys's recently reported fiscal Q3 results, where total revenue came in up 42.4% year-on-year to $2.48 billion.

SNPS's recent pullback is an attractive valuation gap, positioning the company to capture outsized market share as complex multi-die and 3D chip designs become industry standard.

What's the Consensus Rating on Synopsys

Interestingly, Morgan Stanley remains one of the most conservative Wall Street firms on Synopsys.

According to Barchart, the consensus rating on SNPS stock sits at "Strong Buy" currently, with the mean price target of about $551 indicating potential upside of nearly 40% over the next 12 months.
