Quick Read

  • JEPQ's annualized forward distribution of $8.19 nearly doubles JEPI's $4.46, driven by the Nasdaq-100's structurally higher implied volatility premium.

  • JEPQ's 20.69% one-year total return more than doubles JEPI's 9.21%, and its higher payouts have not meaningfully eroded NAV this cycle.

  • Blending JEPQ into a JEPI-core portfolio raises running yield while preserving defensive ballast, with redirecting new contributions avoiding capital gains triggers.

If you own JPMorgan Equity Premium Income ETF (NYSEARCA:JEPI) for the monthly check, recent statements probably looked lighter than expected. JEPI's September distribution of $0.37142 arrived after a stretch of softer payouts, while its Nasdaq-focused sibling has been running hot. That sibling is the JPMorgan Nasdaq Equity Premium Income ETF (NASDAQ:JEPQ), and the gap between the two funds this year reflects exactly what the strategy is built to produce.

Why Retirees Bought JEPI in the First Place

JEPI pairs a defensive, lower-volatility slice of the S&P 500 with equity-linked notes that write out-of-the-money calls on the index. The option premium flows through as a monthly cash distribution. For someone at or near retirement, the appeal is straightforward: broad large-cap exposure, a smoother ride than the index, and a payout that historically surpasses most bond yields. JEPI's top holdings include names like Microsoft, Mastercard, and Johnson & Johnson, anchoring a portfolio that leans towards quality and defense but still also provides growth exposure.

What the 2026 Distribution Data Actually Shows

The two funds are diverging in a way retirees need to understand. JEPI's 2026 monthly payments have swung from $0.34443 in February up to $0.44761 in May, then back down to $0.36664 in August and $0.37142 in September. JEPQ's payments have climbed through the same window, from $0.46572 in February to a 2026 high of $0.70497 in August, with the September payout at $0.68255.

On a trailing basis, the gap widens. JEPI's trailing 12-month total is $4.58338 against an annualized forward run rate of $4.45704. JEPQ's trailing 12-month figure is $6.76379, with an annualized forward distribution of $8.1906. For an income holder, that is the practical difference.

Volatility Is the Engine, and It Sits on the Nasdaq

Both funds sell call exposure through equity-linked notes. The premium those notes generate is a direct function of implied volatility on the underlying index. JEPI writes against the S&P 500. JEPQ writes against the Nasdaq-100, which carries structurally higher realized and implied volatility because the index is concentrated in mega-cap technology names. JEPQ's top positions include NVIDIA at 7.29% of net assets, Apple at 6.31%, and Micron at 4.59%. Those stocks' options trade at wider premiums.

The broad-market volatility gauge frames this clearly. The VIX hit a 2026 high of 31.05 on March 27 and stayed elevated into April and June, then cooled to 15.20 by September 2. That cooldown on the S&P side is why JEPI's recent months have softened. Nasdaq option premium, tied to a more volatile basket, held up better, which shows up in JEPQ's July and August payouts.

Total Return Backs Up the Payout Gap

JEPQ is up 11.60% year-to-date and 20.69% over the past year on total return. JEPI is up 5.49% year-to-date and 9.21% over one year on total return, and its five-year price change is -7.59%.

Higher distributions have not eroded NAV in JEPQ's case this cycle, though the five-year gap partly reflects the tech-led rally that JEPQ was built to ride.

Tradeoffs You Are Actually Accepting

A larger check can mean more principal erosion in a downdraft. JEPQ's underlying index will likely fall harder in a correction, and the fund's calls cap upside on recovery. Concentration is a real concern. NVIDIA, Apple, Micron, and Alphabet dominate the top of the book. JEPI's $46.09 billion portfolio spreads risk across various sectors, including defense, healthcare, and consumer staples. JEPQ largely lacks such diversification. Additionally, both funds' distributions are variable by design. September distributions for both funds are a variable monthly readout of what volatility and premium happened to deliver, and it can shift month to month.

How to Think About a Partial Switch

For an income-focused retiree, a blend makes more sense than a wholesale swap. Rotating a portion of JEPI into JEPQ raises the running yield and adds growth exposure without abandoning the defensive ballast JEPI provides (we walked through how to structure a monthly-income mix like this, including the payout calendar and withdrawal order, in a free guide: The Paycheck Portfolio Method). In a taxable account, selling JEPI can trigger capital gains, so redirecting new contributions and reinvested distributions into JEPQ is often more efficient than a full sale.

What This Means for Your Next Statement

If your goal is maximum current income and you can tolerate deeper drawdowns and heavier tech concentration, JEPQ has been the better vehicle in 2026. If capital preservation ranks above payout size, keeping JEPI as the core and adding JEPQ at the margin is more defensible. The right mix depends on how much of your monthly cash flow you need to be smooth, and how much you can afford to let float with the VIX.
