Quick Read
-
AXTQ doubles the inverse of AXTI's daily move, letting traders bet against a stock up 344% year to date and over 2,200% in the past year.
-
The daily reset erodes value through volatility decay, and a single 50%-plus AXTI rally can wipe out an AXTQ position entirely.

A new exchange-traded fund gives traders a way to double down on a bet against one of this year's hottest semiconductor names. The Tradr 2X Short AXTI Daily ETF (CBOE:AXTQ) is designed to move in the opposite direction of AXT (NASDAQ:AXTI) stock, and to do so with leverage, meaning gains and losses are amplified, according to Tradr ETFs. Tradr ETFs launched the fund on the Cboe exchange under the ticker AXTQ, tracking AXT, Inc. (Nasdaq: AXTI), and Tradr ETFs said the fund was expected to begin trading on Tuesday, August 18.
The fund's expense ratio was not disclosed in the materials available at the time of writing, and neither the issuer snapshot nor the SEC filings feed returned a verified fee figure, so the standard translation of the fee into an annual dollar cost on a $10,000 investment is not possible here. Competing single-stock leveraged and inverse ETFs from issuers such as GraniteShares, Direxion, and Tuttle Capital (T-Rex) typically charge in the range of roughly 1.05% to 1.50% per year, which is a useful reference point until Tradr's fee for AXTQ is confirmed on the fund page or in the prospectus, according to Tradr ETFs.
How the Fund Actually Works
AXTQ is a single-stock inverse leveraged ETF. Tradr ETFs says the fund seeks to deliver -200% of the daily performance of its underlying stock, AXT, Inc. In plain English: if AXTI falls 1% on a given trading day, AXTQ is designed to rise about 2% that same day, before fees. If AXTI rises 1%, AXTQ is designed to fall about 2%. The fund gets this exposure using swaps and other derivatives rather than by actually shorting the stock.

The word that matters most in the fund's name is daily. The 2x inverse target resets at the end of every trading session, according to Tradr ETFs. Over any holding period longer than one day, the fund's return will almost certainly not equal negative two times AXTI's cumulative return over that same period. This is compounding, and in a choppy, sideways market it works against holders of leveraged funds. A stock that zigzags up and down can end the week roughly flat while a 2x daily fund tied to it loses value simply from the day-to-day reset math, according to Tradr ETFs. That erosion is often called volatility decay.
The tail risk is spelled out by the issuer. Tradr ETFs discloses that investors in a fund seeking two times daily performance would lose all of their money if the fund's underlying security moves more than 50% in a direction adverse to the fund on a given trading day. For AXTQ, an adverse move means AXTI rallying sharply.
What AXT Actually Does, and Why a Short Fund Exists
AXT, Inc. is a materials company that makes compound semiconductor wafer substrates: indium phosphide, gallium arsenide, and germanium. Those wafers go into optical connectivity for AI data centers, silicon photonics, 5G radios, lasers, and satellite solar cells. Manufacturing is concentrated in China, and the business has been sensitive to U.S. export permits.
The stock has been a runaway on the back of the AI optical build-out. AXTI is up 344.34% year to date and 2,236.01% over the past year, and it also fell 17.98% over the past month. That combination of a huge run and sharp pullbacks is exactly the kind of volatility that draws issuers of leveraged and inverse products.
Tradr is the ETF brand of AXS Investments and runs a growing suite of 2x single-stock daily ETFs, according to Tradr ETFs. It competes head-on with GraniteShares' YieldBoost and 2x lineup, Direxion's Daily Single Stock funds, and Tuttle Capital's T-Rex products, according to Tradr ETFs. Most rivals do not offer a leveraged inverse product specifically on AXTI, so on the underlying name, AXTQ is currently a differentiated choice rather than a cheaper clone.
Who It Is Built For, and the Risks
Tradr positions its 2x daily funds as short-term trading tools for sophisticated investors and professional traders, not as buy-and-hold holdings and not as retirement-account building blocks, according to Tradr ETFs. The fund has no performance history to judge. New single-stock ETFs frequently launch with small assets and wide bid-ask spreads, and products that fail to gain traction sometimes close. Leverage decay, single-name concentration, derivatives counterparty risk, and the tax quirks of frequently reset derivative funds all apply here. A little speculation with a product like this only works if it stays small and follows rules, the sizing and exit discipline we spelled out in a free speculation playbook.
The things to watch in the coming months are whether AXTQ attracts meaningful assets, how tightly it tracks its -2x daily target on real trading days, and how holders fare during the sharp reversals that have already defined AXTI's chart this year, according to Tradr ETFs.
