The Bitcoin (CRYPTO:BTC) price trades at $79,863 as of September 7, 2026, and it has failed to hold above $82,000 in both of its tries since May, once in the week of May 10 and again in the week ending September 6.
Resistance is a price zone where sellers keep showing up to stop the price moving higher, and BTC keeps getting rejected at $82,000. So if Bitcoin can't clear it, what does that mean for XRP, Ethereum, and Solana, as most altcoins rally when BTC takes the lead?
$82,000 Has Stopped Bitcoin Twice, in May and September
In the week of May 10, 2026, the Bitcoin price hit a high of $82,814 and closed the week at $82,200, then fell the following week to close at $77,408. In the week ending September 6, it reached $82,283 and closed at $79,912. Both times, Bitcoin got above $82,000 and sellers pushed it back down.
So the same level is still stopping Bitcoin four months later, and until buyers overcome the sellers there, the coin could stay below $82,000.

Ethereum (CRYPTO:ETH) trades at $2,491, up 29.97% in the 30 days to September 7 but still down 16.19% since January 1. Solana (CRYPTO:SOL) trades at $105.70, up 40.53% over the same 30 days and down 16.86% for the year. XRP (CRYPTO:XRP) trades at $1.41, up 38.87% in the 30 days to September 7 and down 22.95% since January 1. Bitcoin is up 23.15% for the month and down 10% since January 1 from $88,764.
So all four coins made the same move, and the three altcoins moved more. They rose more than Bitcoin because they're smaller coins and the same money moves them further, and they do the same on the way down. That means the $82,000 ceiling on Bitcoin is a ceiling on all three of them too, and a strong month that leaves every one of them down for the year is a bounce off a low.
The Senate Votes on September 15 and the Fed Decides on September 16
The Senate votes on September 15 on cloture for the CLARITY Act, the crypto market structure bill, which decides whether the Senate takes up the bill and needs 60 votes. Part of this rally was a bet that the bill passes, so if cloture fails, the buyers who bought on the bill lose their reason to hold. Polymarket prices the bill being signed into law in 2026 at about 18%, down from 90% in February.
The Federal Reserve decides rates on September 16, the day after. A strong jobs report on September 4, 2026 strengthened the case for a rate increase even as President Trump publicly demanded a cut, and Polymarket priced a September hike at 60% to 65% as of September 7.
A quarter-point hike would push bond yields higher, and when a government bond pays close to 5%, some savers move money out of coins that pay nothing.
Why the Altcoins Can't Break Out Until Bitcoin Does
XRP, Ethereum and Solana are unlikely to break out while Bitcoin is stuck under $82,000, because all three have moved with Bitcoin since August 7 and moved further than it did. If Bitcoin fails at $82,000 again, the altcoins would probably fall with it, and the smaller ones would fall harder.
However, Bitcoin climbed back above its fifty-week moving average of $81,041 on September 3, per Galaxy Digital, the first time since May the longer trend has pointed up. It only becomes a breakout if Bitcoin closes a week above $82,000 and holds it the week after, and cloture passing on September 15 with a Fed hold on September 16 would make that likelier. Until then, XRP, Ethereum and Solana stay under the same ceiling.
