Amgen Shares Fall as Investors Assess Novartis Lp(a) Trial Result and BMO Downgrade

Amgen (NASDAQ:AMGN) shares fell 4.7% to $416.88 in premarket trading as investors assessed the implications of a Phase III trial result from Novartis involving an experimental Lp(a)-lowering treatment, alongside a downgrade from BMO Capital.

Novartis announced on September 4 that pelacarsen, an investigational treatment designed to reduce lipoprotein(a), did not reduce the risk of cardiovascular death, heart attacks or strokes compared with placebo in its pivotal Phase III study, despite lowering Lp(a) levels in treated patients.

The result is relevant to other companies developing treatments targeting Lp(a), including Amgen, which is evaluating olpasiran in the Phase III OCEAN(a)-Outcomes study.

Amgen Continues Phase III Study of Olpasiran

Olpasiran is an investigational siRNA therapy designed to reduce the production of Lp(a) in the liver.

While both olpasiran and pelacarsen target Lp(a), the treatments use different approaches and may be evaluated in different patient populations. The Novartis trial result therefore does not establish the outcome of Amgen's OCEAN(a)-Outcomes study.

The pelacarsen result has nevertheless introduced additional information for investors assessing whether reductions in Lp(a) will translate into fewer cardiovascular events across experimental treatments targeting the lipid particle.

Results from Amgen's own Phase III programme will be required to determine the clinical outcome for olpasiran.

BMO Capital Downgrades Amgen to Market Perform

Separately, BMO Capital downgraded Amgen from Outperform to Market Perform while maintaining a $450 price target.

According to the supplied information, BMO cited Amgen's approximately 34% year-to-date share-price increase, which had exceeded gains in both the S&P 500 and the pharmaceutical sector.

The firm said commercial execution was reflected in its assessment of the shares and also identified loss-of-exclusivity headwinds as an issue requiring further evaluation.

The rating and $450 price target represent BMO Capital's assessment and are not forecasts from Amgen.

Broader U.S. Market Also Trades Lower

Amgen's decline occurred during a weaker premarket session for major U.S. equity indices, with the S&P 500 down 0.3% and the Dow Jones declining 0.8%.

At $416.88, Amgen shares were trading below their 52-week high of $447.03.

Investors are now awaiting results from the OCEAN(a)-Outcomes trial for evidence on whether olpasiran's reduction of Lp(a) translates into an effect on cardiovascular outcomes. The Novartis trial result does not determine the outcome of Amgen's study.
