Ionis Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ:IONS) shares fell 13.1% to $50.51 in premarket trading as investors continued to assess the Phase 3 trial result for pelacarsen, an RNA-targeted cardiovascular drug licensed to Novartis.

Novartis disclosed on September 4 that the Phase 3 Lp(a)HORIZON study did not meet its primary endpoint. The trial enrolled more than 8,300 high-risk patients over six years and evaluated whether pelacarsen could reduce cardiovascular events compared with placebo.

Pelacarsen lowered lipoprotein(a), or Lp(a), levels, but the study did not demonstrate a statistically significant reduction in the composite endpoint of cardiovascular death, heart attack, stroke and urgent coronary revascularisation.

Trial Result Affects Potential Ionis Payments

Ionis licensed pelacarsen to Novartis under an agreement that included potential commercial payments linked to the drug's development and sales.
