PayPal has eliminated roughly 220 roles in India as part of a previously announced restructuring programme, Reuters reported, citing a person familiar with the matter.

The job reductions are linked to a multi-year plan focused on reshaping PayPal's global operating model.

In an emailed statement to the news agency, a PayPal spokesperson said: "The recent staffing changes are part of our previously announced multi-year transformation to simplify our global operations, strengthen execution, and position the company for long-term growth."

PayPal has outlined cost-saving measures this year under newly appointed CEO Enrique Lores as it seeks to improve its position in the payments market. The company has targeted $400m in cost savings by the end of the year and at least $1.5bn over the next two to three years.

The initiatives include reducing organisational layers, improving productivity, and expanding the use of AI and automation across the business.

PayPal India has a workforce of more than 6,000 employees, according to a Moneycontrol report. The layoffs would therefore represent a reduction of nearly 4% of the company's headcount in the country.

One impacted employee told Moneycontrol: "We didn't get any prior notice. We got an invite to join a call on Monday morning (August 31) and there were many employees on it from across offices in India. We were informed that we would be let go. Right after the call, our access was immediately revoked."

Electronic Payments International has contacted PayPal for further details on the redundancies.

As of the end of 2025, PayPal's global headcount was about 23,800 employees.

The restructuring comes as PayPal continues to attract market speculation about a potential acquisition.

Earlier this year, reports said a consortium including payments company Stripe and private equity firm Advent had made a $53bn offer to buy PayPal.

Recent media reports indicate the parties are no longer pursuing the deal.

"PayPal cuts about 220 jobs in India" was originally created and published by Electronic Payments International, a GlobalData owned brand.
