Viridis Mining and Minerals has awarded the first major equipment contract for its Colossus Rare Earth Project in the state of Minas Gerais in Brazil.

The company has selected Dewater Filter Press to supply the residue pressure filtration package following a 12-month competitive tender and technical evaluation process.

The contract includes the design, manufacture, fabrication, testing and supply of a filtration system intended to handle solid-liquid separation of processed clay before it is returned to the mine as part of rehabilitation activities.

According to Viridis, Dewater was chosen after dedicated testing using Colossus residue, which established the appropriate equipment sizing and operating parameters.

These tests also underpinned contractual performance guarantees for throughput and final residue moisture levels.

The filtration system is considered a critical long-lead procurement component for the Colossus processing facility, which has a planned capacity of five million tonnes per annum.

Equipment manufacture is expected to take roughly 12 months, with delivery aligned to the overall construction and commissioning timeline.

The company recently completed a definitive feasibility study (DFS) for Colossus, and says the new order, along with the previous award of a 138kV grid connection contract, demonstrates that project execution is now under way.

Virdis managing director Rafael Moreno said: "The placement of our first major process equipment order for Colossus is another important step as we move from development into execution.

"Following completion of the DFS and with our equity funding requirement now addressed, our focus is firmly on maintaining momentum through the commencement of EPCM [engineering, procurement and construction management] and progressive commitment of critical-path packages required to protect our targeted 2028 production schedule and position Viridis as the next major Western producer of both light and high-value heavy rare earth."

Viridis has structured the order with staged payment milestones and a contractual hold point before a final investment decision is made, aiming to limit financial exposure ahead of committing fully to the project.

The company reports having secured sufficient equity funding sources to cover the required equity portion of its planned project financing.

The Colossus project targets first rare earth production in 2028. It covers a combined area of 228.62km² in and around the Poços De Caldas Alkaline Complex.

"Viridis awards first equipment contract for Colossus in Brazil" was originally created and published by Mining Technology, a GlobalData owned brand.
