SK hynix (SKHY) stock was among the hottest stories in the chip sector this year. The South Korean memory maker pulled off a record-breaking listing in the United States this summer, and the proceeds were massive.

Valued at a market cap of almost $900 billion, the Korea-based chipmaker has surged 1,400% over the last five years. However, it is also down over 40% from all-time highs.

Here is what is behind the SK hynix stock price surge and the surprising move South Korean officials made once the dollars started flowing in.

SK hynix Stock Price Jumped After Record Nasdaq Debut

SK hynix priced its American depositary receipts at $149 apiece in July, raising roughly $26.5 billion for the chipmaker's expansion plans, which include new factories and equipment, according to CNBC.

It was the largest U.S. share offering ever completed by a foreign company. Investors moved fast once trading opened, given SKHY stock jumped 13% on its first day, closing at $168.01.

SK hynix trails only Samsung as South Korea's most valuable company. Like Samsung (SMSN.L.EB), it builds memory chips that store data in phones and computers and, increasingly, in AI servers. Big tech giants such as Nvidia (NVDA) and Apple (AAPL) are among its customers.

Chairman Chey Tae Won told CNBC the listing felt like a dream come true. He said customers keep asking for more chips even after SK hynix pledged to double its production capacity within five years, telling CNBC that clients still say, "We need more."

Much of that demand centers on high bandwidth memory, known as HBM, a specialized chip that powers Nvidia's AI accelerators. SK hynix leads that market, and Tae Won said he sees no signs of a slowdown in HBM orders.

FX Fund Buys $20 Billion in Dollars

Here is the new development. South Korea's Foreign Exchange Stabilization Fund purchased about $20 billion in U.S. dollars from SK hynix in July, Reuters reported, citing a source with direct knowledge of the matter. The finance ministry and the Bank of Korea, Korea's central bank, jointly run the FX fund. The dollars originated from proceeds SK hynix brought back to Korea after its ADR listing. Reuters said the purchases were made through over-the-counter transactions.

The reasoning behind the move is fairly simple. When a company converts billions of dollars into won all at once, it can make the currency volatile. The won had already hit a 17-year low back in June. By buying the dollars directly from SK hynix, authorities helped absorb that inflow without letting it swing the exchange rate too much, Reuters explained.

South Korea's foreign exchange reserves have been shrinking as the country works to support the won. Taking on SK hynix's dollar windfall gives officials a fresh cushion of dollar assets at a time when reserves were already under pressure.

Demand for the original ADR offering was intense from the start. The deal was more than seven times oversubscribed, according to Reuters, showing how eager global investors were to own a piece of SK hynix stock.

What SK hynix's Earnings Mean for Chip Stocks

The timing lines up with an extraordinary stretch for the company. In its most recent quarter, SK hynix reported revenue of about $51.3 billion, up 210% from the prior year, based on figures shared during the company's earnings call. Operating income came in at about $39 billion, indicating a margin of 76%.

Executives credited AI infrastructure spending, particularly demand for HBM chips, along with growing orders for server memory and enterprise storage, as AI moves from training into everyday use.

SK hynix ended the quarter with net cash of roughly $51.4 billion and expects to spend around $30 billion on capital projects this year to keep pace with customer orders.

Put together, a blockbuster U.S. listing, a government helping manage the currency impact, and record-setting earnings point to a company operating from a position of a wide competitive moat and pricing power. It also shows just how closely SK hynix stock is now tied to the AI buildout and South Korea's broader financial picture.

Out of the 15 analysts covering SKHY stock, 11 recommend "Strong Buy," two recommend "Moderate Buy," and two recommend "Hold." The average SKHY price target is $247.40, above the current price of $159.

For SK hynix's investors, the takeaway is straightforward. SK hynix is no longer just a Korean memory supplier riding a chip cycle. It is one of the largest beneficiaries of the global AI boom.
