Retirement advice tends to assume you spent decades contributing to a 401(k), buying stocks and watching compound interest do its thing. But what happens when someone reaches their late 60s with no investment portfolio, no pension and barely any savings?

That question recently sparked a discussion on Reddit. The most popular answer wasn't a clever budgeting strategy.

"They keep working, move in with family members, or go homeless," one commenter wrote. Another reduced the situation to six words: "Social security and work till you die."

Don't Miss:

For Some People, Retirement Never Comes

Several people shared stories of people working well past the age when Americans traditionally expect to retire. One person's sister worked until she was forced to retire at 74. She then had to sell her home and move to another state to live with her daughter.

Another described a 79-year-old neighbor who worked more than 10 hours a day and didn't stop until he collapsed one morning. He was diagnosed with advanced cancer, moved in with his previously estranged niece and died about three months later.

Of course, working at 70 isn't automatically a tragedy. One 70-year-old commenter said she has plenty saved but keeps working because she loves her job and would be bored otherwise. Another retired engineer reportedly took a retail gardening job simply because he enjoyed talking about gardening.

"There is a difference between working and having to work," one commenter captured the distinction perfectly.

For people who still have time to build retirement assets, that distinction is also why starting at any age matters. Take control of your retirement with a Self-Directed IRA from Advanta IRA. Social Security Becomes the Retirement Plan

For people without investments or pensions, Social Security may become virtually the entire retirement strategy.

One person said her grandmother retired from an office bakery job at 70 and receives about $1,300 a month after insurance. She has roughly $50,000 otherwise saved. Another described a relative surviving on about $800 a month in Social Security while renting a tiny garage apartment for $300.

"They collect Social Security and continue to live in poverty," one person wrote.

Housing can make or break that equation. Some described older relatives getting by because they owned their homes outright, lived in subsidized senior housing or moved in with their children. Others mentioned SNAP, Medicaid and other assistance programs as essential pieces of the puzzle.

Then there is long-term care, where the numbers can become overwhelming. One person said their mother's care facility costs about $8,000 a month for housing and meals while her Social Security provides only about $1,800. Even proceeds from selling a home can disappear quickly at that rate.

There were some encouraging stories. One commenter said their mother lives comfortably in California using Social Security alongside Medicare, Medicaid, food assistance and income-based senior housing.

But the thread's central point was difficult to ignore. Turning 65 or 67 doesn't automatically mean someone can stop working.

As one commenter put it, "Retirement is a financial position, not an age."

For millions of people without enough assets, old age may mean piecing together Social Security, work, public assistance and family support for as long as necessary.

Building Wealth Across More Than Just the Market

Building a resilient portfolio means thinking beyond a single asset or market trend. Economic cycles shift, sectors rise and fall, and no one investment performs well in every environment. That's why many investors look to diversify with platforms that provide access to real estate, fixed-income opportunities, precious metals, and even self-directed retirement accounts. By spreading exposure across multiple asset classes, it becomes easier to manage risk, capture steady returns, and create long-term wealth that isn't tied to the fortunes of just one company or industry.
