Serving as a family caregiver is stressful work for anybody no matter their age or place in life. According to a new LogicMark survey of 1,000 U.S. adults, Gen Z is under the most strain as a whole, with nearly two-thirds saying caregiving hurts their job performance, and half saying it has damaged relationships.

Money struggles are another serious – if not the most serious – consequence of caregiving for many. The survey found 74% of all caregivers experience financial strain.

If you are a Gen Zer who's been thrust into the position of family caregiver, or if you expect you will be eventually, you need a concrete plan of attack to protect your wealth, both present and future. MoneyLion spoke with experts to compile a checklist to follow so your finances don't suffer as a result of caregiving.

Track Your Caregiving 'Burn Rate'

Caregiving is helping, but you also need to reconcile with the fact that helping often entails spending. Start logging expenses or anticipated expenses of caregiving in a shareable, easy-to-read document.

"Someone already providing care can reconstruct the previous 90 days using bank statements, receipts and a simple shared spreadsheet," said Ethan White, CEO at White Sands Tax Services. "Someone anticipating care should conduct a family financial inventory covering the loved one's income, insurance, benefits, debts, and housing. Then decide who will pay for what and place a ceiling on how much the young caregiver can contribute without borrowing or abandoning personal goals. The care plan needs a budget before the caregiver quietly becomes the budget."

Build a Caregiving Emergency Fund

You already know you need an emergency fund for yourself. But did you know you also need one for the person you're caregiving for? Indeed you do, and especially if you're helping them financially in any way.

"Caregiving often comes with unforeseen emergency costs, which is understandable at the moment, but it can leave the caregiver with nothing if they have an emergency of their own, like a car breaking down or an unexpected medical bill," said Michael McAuliffe, president and founder at Family Credit Management.

"If you don't have savings yet, start with something small and automatic, even if it's just $25 a week. That will add up to hundreds of dollars over the year, which will be incredibly useful the next time your already-strapped budget greets an unexpected cost."

Create Legal and Financial Firewalls

Caregiving for a loved one may make your personal lives commingled, but it mustn't make your finances commingled.

"Keep the care recipient's money separate, retain receipts and use a dedicated expense ledger rather than mixing purchases into the caregiver's personal checking account or credit card," White said. "Avoid becoming a joint account owner merely for convenience, and read any nursing-home or care-facility contract carefully before signing language such as 'responsible party that could be interpreted as personal liability."

It is worth your time to look into what the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau recommends caregivers do and don't do when managing the finances of a loved one. White recommended also consulting with an elder-law attorney while the loved one still has decision-making capacity to take care of all the legal business that inevitably arises for most caregivers, once their loved one's needs intensify. Don't delay. Setting up legal and financial firewalls is the most crucial task for caregivers protecting their money.

"Current caregivers should begin documenting and untangling mixed expenses now," White said. "Future caregivers should complete these documents before a hospital discharge turns planning into a crisis."

Understand Setting Boundaries Is an Act of Love

Caregiving stress has a strong emotional aspect. A caregiver may feel bad for their loved one and not want to make what should be a selfless act about money whatsoever. You've got to reframe your thoughts. Dr. Erika Rasure, chief financial wellness advisor at Beyond Finance, advised to set financial boundaries as an act of care, not selfishness.

"A financial limit isn't a limit on love. It's a recognition that you cannot provide sustainable care – financial or personal – from a place of depletion," Rasure said. "You have to put on your own oxygen mask. A caregiver who has destroyed their own financial stability in the process of providing care has created a problem that will eventually compound the one they were trying to solve."
