With a market capitalization of $46.8 billion, PayPal Holdings, Inc. (PYPL) is a global financial technology company that operates a digital payments platform connecting consumers and merchants. The San Jose, California-based company's services enable users to shop, send and receive money, and manage payments online and in person.
Companies with a market cap between $10 billion and $200 billion are typically referred to as "large-cap stocks." PYPL fits right into that category, with its market cap exceeding this threshold, reflecting its substantial size and influence in the financial services industry.

However, the stock currently trades 28.3% below its 52-week high of $79.21 recorded on Oct. 28, 2025. PYPL has gained 33.4% over the past three months, outperforming the Amplify Digital Payments ETF's (IPAY) 19.5% rise during the same time frame.
However, the long-term picture remains grim. The stock has declined 18.4% over the past 52 weeks, compared to the IPAY's 12.3% dip over the same period. In 2026, PYPL is down 2.7% in 2026, while the ETF has surged marginally.
PYPL has been trading mostly above its 50-day and 200-day moving averages since early July, indicating an uptrend.
PayPal's shares fell 12.7% on Sept. 3 after a consortium led by Stripe and Advent International reportedly abandoned its $53 billion takeover pursuit. The deal's collapse removes a major source of support for the stock and leaves PayPal to pursue its operational turnaround independently. The failed bid also highlights the challenges facing PayPal, including competition from Apple Pay and Google Pay and the need to improve its business without a takeover catalyst.
Its top competitor, SoFi Technologies, Inc. (SOFI), has surged 24.4% over the past year, and 29.3% in 2026, rallying PYPL.
Wall Street currently views the stock skeptically. Among the 46 analysts tracking PYPL, the overall consensus stands at a "Hold." While it currently trades above the mean price target of $55.95, its Street-high target of $70 implies an upside potential of 23.2% from the current market price.
