Gold prices just hit a key level for traders

Gold bulls came roaring back in August.

Then sellers showed up right on cue and pushed prices back toward a level buyers were waiting for.

Gold (GC=F) has been trading around one of technical analysis's simplest ideas: the halfway-back mark. After a big move, traders often wait for the price to retrace 50%, because that's where the risk-reward can suddenly get attractive — you can enter near the level and get out quickly if it doesn't hold.

Start with gold's big downswing this year.

Gold futures (GC=F) closed at 5,508.6 on Jan. 29 (1 on the chart below), then fell to 4,048.7 by July 16 (2). The halfway-back level between those two points was 4,778.7, marked by the red dotted line near (3).

Gold rallied hard in August but ran into that zone. Futures reached 4,755 on Aug. 25 (3), just shy of the halfway mark, while RSI, a momentum gauge, had moved into "overbought" territory.

Then sellers took over.

For traders, that's the appeal of a level like this: Sell near it, get out quickly if gold breaks through, or stick around if the reversal starts working.

And that reversal created another halfway-back level.

The rally from the July 16 low (2) to the August high (3) puts its midpoint at 4,373.3 (4). Gold fell almost exactly to that level this week, touching 4,369.7 before bouncing as buyers stepped in.

Sellers were waiting halfway up. Buyers were waiting halfway down.

Technicians often lump the 50% level in with Fibonacci retracements, even though 50% isn't actually a Fibonacci ratio. And there's nothing magical about halfway — markets can blow straight through it.

That's why the reaction is more important than the line itself.

The practical lesson is simple: Find a level where the potential payoff dwarfs the risk, then let the market tell you whether the trade is working.
