Bass Oil has confirmed the identification of oil pay in three separate reservoirs at its Bunian 6 well in Indonesia's South Sumatra Basin.
The well intersected hydrocarbon-bearing zones in the TRM3 and K1 sandstone reservoirs, matching the company's pre-drill expectations, according to analysis of wireline and mud logs.
Subsequent evaluation revealed a further oil-bearing interval in the M sand at the base of the well, the first time oil pay has been encountered in this horizon within the Bunian field.
Bass Oil said that M sand is known as the primary production zone in the adjacent Tangai oilfield. The company will assess the impact of the M sand discovery on field reserves following additional analysis and upcoming well testing.
The Bunian 6 well is currently being completed as a tandem oil producer, designed to draw from the TRM3, K1 and M reservoirs.
The operator expects to bring the well online shortly after the rig is moved off-site. Field production is projected to increase from the present rate of 250 barrels of oil per day (bopd) to approximately 750bopd on a 100% basis as a result of the new well.
Bass Oil holds a 55% operated interest in the Tangai-Sukananti KSO (joint operation), with Mega Adhyaksa Pratama Sukananti holding the remaining 45%.
Bass Oil managing director Tino Guglielmo said: "Bass is very pleased with the Bunian 6 well result. The oil pay identified in the M sand is a welcome bonus and should positively impact field oil recoveries.
"This result is adding weight to the interpretation of a westerly extension to the Bunian field and offers Bass low-risk production growth at a time of high oil prices.
"Bunian 6 is the first of several growth projects currently under way in Australia and Indonesia that together will establish the company as a profitable mid-tier energy company."
The Tangai-Sukananti KSO includes the Bunian and Tangai fields, discovered in 1998 and situated in a region covered by 3D seismic.
A recent integrated field study including seismic reprocessing and attribute analysis confirmed Bunian 6 as a development candidate.
In June this year, Bass Oil finalised the acquisition of the Vanessa gas field in the Cooper Basin, South Australia, from BeachEnergy after receiving regulatory approval from the South Australian Department of Energy & Mining.
