The recent breakout of Moderna reminded investors that AI stocks aren't the only destination to make money. Healthcare and biotech stocks offer promising long-term opportunities if chosen wisely.

We ran an analysis based on Insider Monkey's proprietary database of over 900 hedge funds to see which healthcare stocks trading under $20 billionaire-led funds were holding at the end of the second quarter.

A total of 23 billionaire-led funds held stakes in Viatris (NASDAQ: VTRS) at the end of the second quarter, down slightly from 24 funds in the first quarter. The stock trades around $16 as of Sept. 1.

BioCryst (NASDAQ: BCRX) had 22 billionaire-led funds holding stakes at the end of the second quarter, up from 20 funds in the first quarter. The stock trades near $10 as of the start of September.

In this article, we will focus on VTRS. The stock is up about 33% so far this year.

Viatris makes and sells generic drugs and off-patent branded medicines. Q2 revenue rose about 4.9% year over year. Management raised fiscal 2026 guidance across all key metrics.

Catalysts

The FDA approved Gwyn Lo, a once-weekly contraceptive patch, and approval came earlier than the deadline the agency had set for its decision. Viatris plans to launch the product later in fiscal 2026. A fast-acting version of meloxicam, a non-opioid painkiller, is still under FDA review, and the company expects approval in the coming months.

Demand for the company's estradiol patch, used in hormone replacement therapy, jumped after the FDA removed a safety warning from the label at the end of last year.

Two late-stage drugs report trial results in the first half of fiscal 2027. Selatogrel is a self-injected treatment for heart attacks, and cenerimod treats lupus.

Valuation

Forward non-GAAP P/E sits near 6.6 against a sector median close to 19.7. Forward EV/EBITDA is about 7 versus roughly 13.

Risks

Tariffs are the larger overhang. Many generic exemptions expire in 2028, with reported tariffs on Indian generics starting in August 2028. Viatris imports heavily. Management says over half of US revenue comes from products manufactured domestically.
