Most Americans will never earn $500,000 a year. But plenty wonder what it would actually take to live that way.

We ran the calculations on how much money you would need to invest to live a nice six-figure lifestyle.

The Number Is Bigger Than You Think

The 4% rule says you need $12.5 million saved to sustain $500,000 a year without working. But that is before taxes. Withdrawals from IRAs and 401(k) plans are taxed as ordinary income. At $500,000 a year, you are in the 32% to 35% federal bracket.

"A $12.5 million retirement fund with a 4% withdrawal rate seems like it can fund $500,000 of spending," said George Dimov, certified public accountant (CPA) and founder of Dimov Tax. "It really funds $300,000 of spending, after taxes, unless the investment mix is carefully planned years ahead."

The real target is $18.75 million to $20.75 million.

What You Need To Invest Each Month

Here is how much you would need to invest each month to hit those targets, assuming a 7% average annual return.

To reach $12.5 million:

  • 50 years: $2,294 a month

  • 40 years: $4,762 a month

  • 30 years: $10,246 a month

  • 20 years: $23,996 a month

To reach $18.75 million:

  • 50 years: $3,442 a month

  • 40 years: $7,143 a month

  • 30 years: $15,369 a month

  • 20 years: $35,994 a month

Those figures assume a standard diversified portfolio, the kind built through consistent contributions to a 401(k) account, IRA or brokerage account over time.

The Secret Is Not the Salary

Saving enough is only part of the challenge.

"Accumulating money for retirement is only half the battle," said David Johnston, certified financial planner (CFP) and wealth management advisor at OnePoint BFG Wealth Partners. "Much more sophisticated planning is required to preserve principal and generate income."

For context, $500,000 is about six times the $83,730 median U.S. household income in 2024, per Census Bureau data. The lifestyle is attainable. Getting there just takes longer and costs more than most people expect.

Methodology: Monthly investment figures assume a 7% average annual return, adjusted for inflation, compounded monthly, starting from zero.
