Buckle (BKE) Raised Prices as Units Per Transaction Fell. Is its 48% Gross Margin Sustainable?

The Buckle, Inc. (NYSE:BKE) reported fiscal second-quarter net sales of $319.8 million, up 4.6%, while comparable-store sales increased 2.1% and online sales rose 2.3%. However, units per transaction declined approximately 1%, while average unit retail increased about 4.5% and average transaction value rose 3.5%. Shares closed 2.7% higher at $43.81 on August 21 following the results.
Gross margin reached 47.8%, up 40 basis points from 47.4% a year earlier. Yet net income slipped to $44.4 million from $45.0 million, and GAAP diluted EPS declined to $0.87 from $0.89. For The Buckle, Inc. (NYSE:BKE), the question is whether stronger pricing and disciplined merchandising can preserve its margin once the quarter's tariff benefit disappears.
The Buckle, Inc. (NYSE:BKE) reported a 110-basis-point improvement in merchandise margin, including 65 basis points from tariff refunds. Excluding that benefit, merchandise margin still improved by about 45 basis points, supported by a higher private-label mix, regular-price selling and lower markdowns. However, excluding the 65-basis-point tariff-refund benefit, gross margin would have been approximately 47.2%, about 25 basis points below the prior-year level.
Buying, distribution and occupancy costs offset 70 basis points of the merchandise-margin progress, partly reflecting new and relocated stores. Selling, general and administrative expenses also increased to 30.4% of sales from 29.0%, while operating margin declined to 17.4% from 18.4%.
Bull Case
Pricing power at The Buckle, Inc. (NYSE:BKE) appears credible because comparable sales remained positive despite higher average prices. Women's sales increased 9.5%, private-label penetration rose to 44.5% from 43.5%, and management described inventories as clean, with fewer markdowns and strong full-price selling.
At quarter-end, The Buckle, Inc. (NYSE:BKE) held $322.9 million in cash and investments and reported no funded debt. That balance-sheet strength supports store investment and shareholder returns. The retailer also paid a $3.00-per-share special dividend in January alongside its regular quarterly dividend, reinforcing its appeal to income-oriented investors.
Bear Case
The main risk for The Buckle, Inc. (NYSE:BKE) is that pricing is doing more work while customers are buying fewer items per transaction. Men's sales were essentially flat, including a roughly 3.5% decline in men's denim, and footwear remained soft.
Inventory increased 13.3% to $161.4 million, considerably faster than quarterly sales. Some of that increase supports new stores and relocations, but the gap raises markdown risk if demand slows. The Buckle, Inc. (NYSE:BKE) must show that higher average prices can coexist with stable traffic and unit demand, particularly as its tariff-refund benefit rolls off.
Insider Monkey's Hedge Fund Data
The filings available so far reflect positions held before BKE released its fiscal second-quarter results. Insider Monkey's database showed 39 hedge funds holding BKE at the end of March 2026, down from 37 funds three months earlier.
Conclusion
The Buckle, Inc. (NYSE:BKE) remains a high-quality specialty retailer with strong merchandise economics, substantial liquidity and unusually high insider alignment. Buckle's underlying gross margin remains attractive, but sustaining the reported 47.8% level will require additional merchandise-margin gains or better leverage in buying, distribution and occupancy costs after the tariff benefit rolls off.
The quarter's 40-basis-point gross-margin expansion should not be annualized blindly. Tariff refunds supplied more than half of the merchandise-margin improvement, operating margin declined, and inventory outpaced sales. The retailer must convert its pricing power and private-label growth into lasting margin gains without weakening demand.
