Moving out of your parents' house has long been treated as a sign that you've made it. Get your own apartment, pay your own bills and eventually buy your own home. But one Reddit user who spent years working construction in wealthy neighborhoods noticed that some families with the most money weren't particularly interested in following that script.

The poster said they regularly saw adult children living with parents and other relatives, sometimes well into their 40s. These were people who could easily afford their own homes. Instead, the poster noticed families staying together and building wealth together, while middle-class families often encouraged young adults to strike out alone before they were financially established.

What If Staying Home Is Actually a Financial Advantage?

"It's the idea of pooling resources for bigger gain," one commenter responded. "It's been sold to the working class that it's a bad thing and rugged individualism is the way to go."

Another described family wealth as having an "instant network and available funding." That support can take many forms. Parents might cover housing while an adult child saves, help pay for college, provide childcare or put money toward a first home or business.

One commenter said they pool housing and resources with their son, explaining that the arrangement allows them to do more with their money and investments. "I admit I gave him the start," they wrote. "But he didn't waste it and that's the true wealth of generational wealth."

Several people pointed out that this isn't exclusively something wealthy families do. Multigenerational living is common in many cultures, and commenters shared examples of immigrant families combining incomes and expenses while establishing themselves financially.

Of course, there's an obvious difference between sharing a mansion and squeezing several adults into a small apartment. As one person put it, "There's a massive difference" between an adult child living in a pool house or separate wing and six adults packed into a small townhouse.

Space, privacy and healthy relationships matter. Several people said they left home because of conflict, overcrowding or difficult family relationships. Staying together isn't automatically a financial win if everyone is miserable.

Building Wealth Without Doing Everything Alone

Still, the discussion raises an interesting question: Why does financial success so often get tied to doing everything yourself?

Real estate has helped many families build and pass down wealth, but buying an entire investment property isn't the only way to get started. Arrived makes real estate investing accessible to people with anywhere from $100 to $1 million to invest. You can buy fractional shares of professionally selected rental properties without dealing with renovations, tenants, contractors or maintenance yourself.

Arrived handles the day-to-day work, while its properties are selected with the goal of generating rental income and increasing in value over time. You can earn monthly dividends and build a real estate portfolio with just a few clicks.

The Reddit discussion ultimately wasn't an argument that everyone should live with their parents forever. It showed how much easier building wealth can become when a family sees its resources as something that can help the next generation get ahead.

Maybe moving out isn't always the financial milestone we've made it out to be.
