Shares of Visa and Mastercard closed at record highs on Monday, according to MarketWatch, signaling continued strength in U.S. consumer spending despite pressure on American shoppers.
Visa shares rose 3.1% on Monday to settle at $382.41, topping the previous record set on June 11, 2025, when the stock closed at $373.31, per Dow Jones Market Data cited by MarketWatch. It was the first time either payment network's shares had reached a record closing level in over a year.
Investors widely regard Visa as a bellwether for overall economic activity, given the breadth of spending its network captures. The milestone arrived at a moment when consumer behavior is shifting, with shoppers growing more deliberate about where they direct their dollars.
Visa's recent quarterly results offered supporting evidence. The company reported fiscal third-quarter net revenue of $11.6 billion, a 14% increase over the prior year, with payments volume rising 10% on a constant-dollar basis for the three months ended June 30. Total processed transactions reached 71.7 billion, also up 10% over the prior year.
"Consumer and business spending remains resilient, and our strategy continues to deliver strong performance across consumer payments, commercial and money movement solutions and value-added services," Chief Executive Officer Ryan McInerney said in a statement at the time.
Cross-border volume excluding transactions within Europe rose 12% on a constant-dollar basis during the quarter, while total cross-border volume increased 13%. GAAP net income for the quarter was $5.6 billion, or $2.97 per share, up 7% and 10% respectively from the prior year.
Visa returned $6.2 billion to shareholders through share repurchases and dividends during the fiscal third quarter. The company repurchased approximately 14.5 million shares of Class A common stock at an average cost of $330.71 per share, totaling $4.9 billion, and had $28.4 billion in remaining authorized buyback capacity as of June 30.
