Pre-Market Stock Futures:

Futures are trading higher after a mixed Monday, with major indices moving in different directions. Investors are preparing for Federal Reserve Chairman Warsh's comments at the Jackson Hole economic summit later this week. They will also be closely watching the print for the Fed's most heavily weighted inflation gauge, the Core PCE Price Index, on Wednesday, which will likely determine whether the Fed keeps interest rates steady at 3.50% to 3.75% or changes its path. The final data that could lead to a rate hike comes in early September with the August non-farm payrolls and the August consumer and producer price index numbers. 3 of the four major indices closed lower Monday, with only the Dow Jones Industrials carving out a gain, closing up 0.26% at 53,417, while the small-cap Russell 2000 was lower to start the week, closing at 2,995, down 0.76%. The tech-heavy Nasdaq closed at 25,980, down 0.77%, while the S&P 500 finished the session at 7,652, down 0.28%.

Treasury Bonds:

Yields were lower across most of the Treasury curve as Secretary Bessent said he can tap the Treasury General Account for up to $1 trillion to supplement buying long Treasury debt and help lower overall interest rates. Many see this as an Operation Twist knock-off that likely won't tamp down rates long term. When the final bell rang, the 30-year long bond closed the day at 5.24%, down 4 basis points, while the 10-year note was last seen at 4.70%, down 3 basis points.

Oil and Gas:

Prices were lower across the energy complex Monday as the Treasury announced it is expanding major economic sanctions against Iran worldwide, without targeting Chinese banks. Brent Crude closed the Monday session at $92.06, down 2.47%, while West Texas Intermediate ended Monday trading at $85.06, down 2.30%. Natural gas was flat, closing at $2.77, down 0.14%.

Gold:

Gold continued the rally that began at the start of the month, with traders citing growing U.S. debt, a weaker dollar, and ongoing geopolitical tensions worldwide as drivers of its strength. Gold closed Monday at $4,653, up 1.11%, while Silver was last seen at $68.74, down modestly to $68.70.

Crypto:

The short squeeze rally that drove the price of Bitcoin up in a massive way last week for its biggest rally and weekly gain since 2023 (with some metrics marking its best performance since early 2021) continued on Monday. Bitcoin has jumped over 20% in the last month to trade in the $77,000–$80,000 range, marking its largest weekly percentage and dollar gain in years. At 8 AM EDT, Bitcoin was trading at $79,420, while Ethereum was quoted at $2,483.
