Royal De Vries folding-carton plant closes after 152 years

Royal De Vries Cardboard Printing has ended production at its folding-carton factory in Sneek, the Netherlands, after 152 years, after efforts to sell the entire business failed, according to a press release posted on WhatTheyThink.

The decision has resulted in all 98 employees losing their jobs.

All assets have been taken over by German industrial remarketing company Allaoui and are being put up for sale.

The machinery on offer includes a KBA offset press, along with Bobst and MK Masterwork converting lines.

Royal De Vries, formally Koninklijke Drukkerij De Vries Vouwkartonnage, was founded in 1874 as a printer in the north of the Netherlands.

During the 20th century, it developed into a major folding-carton manufacturer serving domestic and international brand owners. The business was granted the Dutch royal designation in 2016.

The company added a seven-colour Koenig & Bauer Rapida 106 with double coater in 2021, followed by spending on end-of-line automation in 2024.

Despite those steps, the company slipped into loss by the close of 2024.

Revenue declined from €28.3m ($33m) in 2023 to €24.3m in 2025, while the loss reached €3.1m.

FB Oranjewoud Participaties, the majority shareholder since taking control in 2018, said a reorganisation in 2025 caused quality and delivery issues that prompted customers to shift work to other suppliers.

Although those issues were resolved, sales did not recover.

The company filed for bankruptcy in June 2026 and was declared bankrupt in Leeuwarden one day later.

Administrator Christian Geffroy of Dommerholt Advocaten continued operating the site until 31 July to complete outstanding orders and preserve the business for a potential buyer.

He held talks with several interested parties about a sale of the full operation, but no deal was completed before the deadline.

Listings published on Allaoui show the sale includes the 2021 KBA Rapida 106 offset press, a Bobst Expertfold 110 A2, a Bobst Visioncut 106 LER, and a range of die-cutting, folder-gluing and packaging automation equipment.
